For me, Xie Yanke and Bei Haishi both sound infinitely better in Canto - Tse Yeen Hak and Bui Hoi Shek.

And I just found another instance of name wordplay which doesn't work in the wrong dialect. It's Gu Long, so only works in Mandarin. In Righteous Blood Cleansing Spear, when Wu Shishan's name is mentioned, they confuse his "Wu" with the normal surname "Wu" as per the "Hundred Family Surname" poem. As follows:- "不是周吴郑王的吴,是虚无的无"

In Canto you couldn't confuse "Mou" with "Ng", although you could always replace with with "毛" I suppose. Wonder if 毛 is in the Hundred Family Surname book, though. Wu Shishan is also a really cool name, if only for the history behind the name.

I never knew Jin Yong wrote in Cantonese. I always thought he wrote in Cantonese because of his sentence structure and the words he use. Sound more smooth in mandarin. But, the names do indicate that he used Cantonese.

I think 曲靈風 also sounds better in Canto than mandarin.

I never knew Jin Yong wrote in Cantonese. I always thought he wrote in Cantonese because of his sentence structure and the words he use. Sound more smooth in mandarin. But, the names do indicate that he used Cantonese.

I don't know for sure, I'm merely guessing from the wordplay he used in his names, which don't really work in Mandarin. Same with Gu Long's wordplay working in Mandarin instead of Cantonese.

My relatives in HK say they see JY quite often walking about in HK, going to market etc, so he might have a HK upbringing which prompts him to think in Canto. Just guessing.

Jin Yong mostly wrote his novels in the early 50's/60's for Ming Pao in HK right? It's probably safe to assume he was writing with Cantonese in mind ...

Along the same lines, Gu Long was based mostly in Taiwan, so he probably wrote in Mandarin.

This might not count, but I recall when I read the Buddha's Palm comic series from Tony Wong a long time ago, there was this pair of fighters, you couldn't really tell if they were female or male, they were either girls or very effeminate men, or maybe one of each. They were lovers and their names were 藍不男 and 呂不女 (Lam Pat Lam and Lui Pat Lui, phonetically meaning not quite male, not quite female). I don't think I'll ever forget them even though they were just very minor side characters!!

Hmm - I thought 曲靈風 sounds smoother in Mando but better in Canto. I like how this name is unisex. I can visualize a female called 曲靈風 (mando) and a man as 曲靈風 (canto).

Luk Siu Fung himself explained this in one of the stories: apparently, "fung" is the male phoenix while "wong" is the female phoenix.
