    Default New York City Lunch

If you're a New Yorker, what are some good spots you recommend for eating lunch in the city? Ideally under $15.

I found this place called Go Go Curry that has awesome curry and Japanese katsu. Cheap, fast, & good.

I just joined the group haha! Hopefully my handsome face won't scare the kiddies away... I shoulda shaved before I took that pic.

I am a pretty low class lunch diner. Usually go to those places with like $7, $8 lunch specials. (mostly Asian, cuz they are cheaper usually) I actually kind of like Thai food nowadays. I just avoid the very spicy stuff.

flyingfox: I recommend Spice for Thai food. http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/33070505/

They have this delicious banana chocolate mousse cake for dessert too which I hope they still do.

PJ: When I used to work closer to Chinatown in NYC, I was able to get $2-$4 lunches but midtown NY is expensive.

Where near CHNtown were you able to get $2 lunches? The only thing I can think of that costs around $2 nowadays are one slice of pizza, one hotdog, or some buns from those bakery places. For a full fledge lunch meal that comes on a plate (or at least a plastic box), the cheapest I can find is about $3, and it tastes nasty. Guaranteed heart burn.

I remember back in the day when I worked PT summers in Chinatown near Mott street, we kiddies were able to get $2 lunches, but that was like 10 yrs ago.

Just guessing, but maybe a dish like Pork & Preserved Egg Porridge -or- Wonton & Egg Noodles. I got both in SF Chinatown for about $4 total, so about $2 each.

I haven't ordered pourridge in a very long time, simply because I don't like the way the vendor-made ones taste. Back in the day (again, 10 yrs or so ago), you could get a plastic container of it for under $1. I think today you could get it for around $2, but I am not sure.

I don't really count that as "lunch" though. I would not be able to sustain myself on one small container of rice in water.

Come to think of it, I am a pretty damn big eater now, but that's another story. Metabolism too fast.

Hm interesting, didn't know there were other NYCers too. I work around midtown and get the halaal lamb/chicken over rice a lot. Pretty good deal for about $4.50.

$3 for 10 boiled pork dumplings at Tasty Dumpling. It's a meal. I was disappointed that they raised the price though. It used to be $1 for 5 dumplings but now it's $1.25. Curse inflation.

There are a few dumpling places like that in NYC Chinatown.

This place has a cheap rice lunch special, mostly under $5.

But you have to get their lunch menu outside the door. If you go in and sit, they'll hand you the expensive menu.

bliss, there are not many cheap places for lunch around midtown and I have yet to try the vendor halaal - though I smell it every morning on the way to work. I do appreciate that there are many Indian restaurants around but also not cheap.

Where around midtown are you? There's a really good chinese noodles/rice restaurant on 48th between 5th and 6th that I like to go to. Prices are a little bit more expensive than Chinatown but at least it's in Midtown and the quality is quite acceptable.

That's too far for me to walk during lunch. I'm closer to the 30s street area on Park Ave S. The only decent Chinese place I found near me is Szechuan Gourmet though some of their dishes are pretty spicy.
