BEIJING - A plucky dynamo from Calgary has ended Canada's medal drought at the Beijing Summer Olympic Games. Carol Huynh of Calgary has advanced to the gold-medal match of the women's 48kg freestyle wrestling competition.
Hunyh didn't surrender a point in defeating Tatyana Bakatyuk of Kazakhstan in her semi final bout at the China Agricultural University Gymnasium.
"I'm so excited," said Hunyh, who will face either Japan's Icho Chiharu or Clarissa Chun of the United States in the gold-medal bout at 4:50 a.m. EST.
    Good News for Canada.
    She is Vietnamese Canadian.

The whole point is that Canada didn't win a single medal, whereas so many other smaller and less known countries have. Oh well, at least they won a medal for something that's barely even a sport.

Eh? Freestyle wrestling is one of the older and more traditional Olympic sports in the history of the games.

It still barely counts as a sport in my books.

Oh, well can't blame me for thinking otherwise. Phelps did win his 7th by one-one hundredth of a second.

Lets see if NZ could get more medals than Canada.

    Canada - 1 gold 1 silver

    NZ - 1 gold 2 bronze

Damn, we were suppose to win the single skulls. Stomach bug resigned Drysdale to a mere bronze. We were expected to get 2 golds 2 bronze from rowing. We are expecting a silver (at least) in the veldrome individual pursuit and a medal in the shot pot.

How are the prospects looking for Canada in the 2nd week?

That wasn't our first medal. The first medal came from rowing men's pair, a silver. Most importantly, we now also have a bronze medal in swimming, a discipline Canada was desperate to have. Canada's medals count is now up to four.

That's only for this Olympics right? It's not like Canada has only won 4 medals in its Olympic history, right?

    Course not.

    That would be quite sad.

LOL, I sure hope so. We're not very good in summer sports, but we're not THAT bad, at least not always. The best summer Olympics for Canada was in 1996 where we won 22 medals. We won 12 medals in Athens and those games are considered a disappointment for us because for the first time since 1964 in Tokyo, Canada didn't win a single medal in swimming.

We only won one bronze this Olympics, but here's hoping that we'll get better. Did you know that at the Montreal Olympics in 1976, Australia didn't win a single medal in swimming? Hard to believe, but true. We were in fact on par with the Aussies, but things quickly changed. When you have willingness and money, that's when things happens.

Here's an interesting article about Swimming Canada: Former rival lapping Canada in the pool

Hopefully Canada will learn from the Aussies like they've learnt from us. We have repatriated two Canadians who were working in Australia back to the country; my favourite athlete of all time Alex Bauman and coach Pierre Lafontaine. At least we're trying to change our position and not be contempt with status quo.
