Default Olympics: When will these whining stop?

For the record, I support USA and wish that USA becomes top cointry in the 2008 Beijing.
However a lot of the US whining is iritating me. Another example:

SI reports "Questionable scoring, tiebreaker cost Liukin individual gold medal

Athletes go into the games knowing the rules, If they do not it is their fault.
If one loses they cannot blame the rules as goofy.

Just imagine if a country loses the Soccer World Cup or olympic gold in soccer in a shoot-out and blame the rules calling the shoot-out rule goofy.

It never will because it makes for interesting media stories. Gives that dramatic touche to the Olympics programme.

Well, I can understand why people are a little confounded, because the tiebreaker rule are rather confusing. Incidentally, the same thing happened twice at the men's competition, for the gold and bronze positions of vault. Not sure about the suspicious scoring claim, unless some extraordinary telepathic work was at play. But again, seems like another call for a rules overhaul for gymnastics in the future.

With that said, the US does whine an awful lot. For instance, they simultaneously cast incredulity and suspicion at Jamaica's sprinting medal sweep, just as they did the same thing with China's 1-2 in the women's butterfly, all but hinting at doping, though athletes from both countries have undergone extensive drug tests and are verified to be clean. God forbid that other athletes are allowed to improve or that other countries' investments in their sports program actually pay off!

If it's not that, then it's the pollution, or the loud cheering from the crowd, or having to wait to perform. No matter that every other athlete is also faced with the same situation. But I guess that's what happens when nationalism is so intertwined with sport. *shrugs*

I haven't seen Liukin whining at all. In fact she even said He Kexin deserved the Gold Medal.

If the press is trying to stir things up, well that's just how the press is.

It makes great headlines, so the "whining" won't ever stop.

I do have to admit that Bela's pretty annoying.

I think it's good to point out an unfair rule, even if it makes the US look like a habitual whiner

It's kind of strange, but Liukin has been such a good sport that it's nice.

And it looks like the Chinese female gymnasts has finally broken the duck.

Can't blame em for being odd. First it is a stupid rule...seriously stupid. Second, it is weird..that Helen Colagiuri judged her scores quit differently than others..I think both should of been given golds. Gotta admit thought, sometimes when it comes down to close margins in judging, there is a probability of host bias.

I agree they should have just given them both Golds. I don't know why the IOC is so against ties in Gymnastics when it's perfectly fine in other sports.

Really? They do give Double Golds in the Olympics?

Yeah, but I mean the goldless run of defeats and mistakes.

in some things such as swimming and track. It's much more absolute. while on the other hand, we'll probably never see them giving double gold to the likes of basketball or tennis (or the likes).

i can see why they won't give out double golds for gymnastics.

wtf is up with the unevenbar judging, that should not even be a tie, the US girl was clearly better, stuck the dam landing too.

I personally thought Nastia's routine looked cleaner in execution. Shame that she lost to such a sad way. Maybe if she got a lower score, she wouldn't feel as bad.

and I just watched how they did a"tie" breaker..., i don't buy the math, but that is the way it goes.

I have to say KeXin had a nice release skill, looked better than Nastia.

if you're just judging from audience perspective...i think yang yilin's routine looked cleaner than nastia's, and yet she got an even lower score. but i won't claim to be more of an expert than the judges

they all started off with the same difficulty.

Yea they do. If you tie in the timed events like Swimming or Track they will give both athletes a Gold. Of course, since the timed events are measured to hundreths of a second, ties are extremely rare. The most famous example is probably the 50m freestyle final from Sydney, when Gary Hall Jr. and Anthony Ervin tied for Gold.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_...mpics#Swimming

IMO if they can hand out double Gold's for ties in 100% objectively timed events, then highly subjective events like Gymnastics should almost certainly be awarding double-golds in the case of a tie. At the very least if they really need a tie-breaker, using something like overtime where they both perform the same routine again would be better than such a weird tie-breaking system.

IMO the performance on the bar itself was close enough to call it even but the landing was totally different, side stepping I believe is 1/10 of a point and that should have made a difference.
