Default Do you like your wuxia restrained by limits of realism, or do you like total fantasy?

Generally, do you prefer your wuxia stories to be constrained by a sense of (relative) realism, or do you prefer it to be complete fantasy...breaking real world physical laws with impunity?

I just want consistency. Even fantasy has their own in-universe laws, and I want to see Wuxia writers establish a set law and keep by it, rather than making it up as they go.

Someone is still grumpy about Yan "My 15th sword is [DEATH], and when it cometh, the world doth freezeth!" Shisan.
Read the latest chapters of Coiling Dragon at Wuxia World!

Today, it's more like, "Little Dragon Girl is 150 years old now, but because of her Jade Maiden Training, she still looks eighteen and is active in the time of HSDS."

I don't think anyone was being serious, at least I wasn't, about XLN living 150 years later.

    Just being a little facetious.

Little Dragon Girl is such an ugly translation.

Kinda like Big Dipper Formation. Things just sound way better in their original form.

I think there should be some limitations just to make things more relatable (as if we can ever related to some of the moves though).

    I don't think so! I like it.

By the way, Ken and I think one of the greatest translations ever is Divine Farming.

That's the way things work in wuxia. Things sound incredibly awkward and too literal in English, but smooth and poetic in Chinese.

Some people have seriously argued for that before.

Then again, a few of those people seriously thought they *were* Yeung Gor too.

I don't want time manipulations, bringing the dead back and mass creation. I'm fine with others... pretty much.

    i'm fine with everything except:

    1. stuff that xu zhu does, wtf is that shit, forget about talent and years of practice, just let someone else who practiced for 70 years hand it to you.

    2. stuff that duan yu does.

    3. stuff that ZWJ does. he mastered level 7 of QKDNY in a few hours, whereas another highly skilled master would take his entire lfe to master merely 5th level, yeah right. oh yeah, he mastered tai chi by watching it once, yeah right.

The only reason I enjoy wuxia stories is because they are so closely tied to the real world and ancient culture, Oriental King Arthur if you will. Comics and books about the completely supernatural don't appeal to me.

With ideas quickly running out, don't be surprised if one day some martial arts expert or powerful martial arts in a novel comes from outer space.

I will completely lose interest in new Wuxia.

"Exotic" sounds more attractive than "new".

In a certain well documented adaptation of Lu Xiao Feng . . .

In Jin Yong's universe, up till his second to last novel (SPW), internal energy was king of the hill. All the high level martial arts depended pretty much solely on internal energy. IF you had enough (orthodox) internal energy, you could learn anything quickly. That's why Duan Yu could learn 6MSJ, Shi Potian could tap into OTG, Zhang Wuji could learn Taiji and Qiankun Danuoyi, and Yang Guo could wield the HIS.

Actually, I like the Little Dragon Girl name. I used that a lot rather than SLL or something. Big Dipper Formation is not so bad either, though I assume the original Chinese does sound better.
