Default Highly acclaimed artist you don't get

What highly regarded, respected and critically acclaimed band or soloist you just don't get and don't like? It's not about who's overrated, it's who you just don't understand.

    Me, I simply don't get...

Nine Inch Nails - Trent Reznor, your vocal melodies suck. I would even say overrated, but since I don't know NiN very well because I can't get past the vocals, I'll just say that I don't understand it.

The Smiths - I actually understand the reason they're so acclaimed, but I personally don't like their songs. They're not bad songs, but I never feel like listening to any of them songs. Johnny Marr's jangle guitar doesn't do anything to me.

Radiohead - Now this is a very talented band, their music is truly original and I know it's quality stuff, but at the end of the day, I don't enjoy their songs that much. "OK Computer" is constantly considered one of the best albums of the past 20 years, yet I only like the 3 singles, especially "No Surprises" which I think is excellent, but the rest I find rather boring.

    That's it for now.
My obsessions: Joy Division, New Order, Bones, The Office.

I was about to say HK Twins, until I realize that they don't really qualify according to your first sentence.

I don't like NIN either, but Radiohead is absolutely amazing. They are very creative, unique, and talented. But I guess it's different for everyone.

I never liked Soundgarden, mostly because I can't stand Chris Cornell.

Here's one: Nickelback. This band is really successful, but the thing is, no one I ever talked to like them. Most hate them. I don't get how they're making money still. They have no talent, reuse their melodies, and their singer can't sing.

I respect Radiohead a lot and some of their songs I find very good. It's just that it doesn't happen too often.

That's the problem, Nickelback is one of the most hated bands I know so they don't qualify as a highly respected and critically acclaimed band.

I missed that part in your post. But still, their success baffles me.

Rolling Stones. I don't like them that much.

Here is something I'm going to get flamed for, The Beatles. I like them, but I don't find them to be that great musically.

they were pretty good for their time. Music have grow alot over the years (or maybe just changes), and most artist aren't gonna be able to cross into the next generation and be "good".

well they claim she's unique because she's a white girl with a black voice. . I don't find her particularly good. I actually like MJ stuff, he's a good entertainer and a very underated singer.

You could actually be led into believing that if your exposure to the Beatles is limited to the dozen or so songs that get played to death on radio. Their acclaim as the greatest of all pop/rock bands in history came not just from those hits, however, but from those dozens and dozens of great songs buried on their albums that never get played on radio.

Au contrere, nearly forty years after they disbanded, the Beatles are still the gold standard by which pop music is measured.

    I realize that.
It's really more of a personal taste than anything. The Beatles just don't suit my style as well as say, Queen, whom I adore much more. I acknowledge the importance that The Beatles have in music even today, but from a personal point of view, I like them, but don't think they're that great.

Yea I understand that The Beatles is good, but simply do not see why they can sell so many albums lol. Same for Elvis.

She's famous for all the drug taking dramaz.
I've never heard of her until I saw her face plastered every where on gossip sites about her crazy drug taking habits, and followed by bets on when she will kick the bucket from OD.

To me it's Eric Clapton. He's a good artist but I don't think he lives up to all the praises people has given him. Guitar techniques wise, Clapton is nothing if compared with the likes of Slash (Guns N' Roses), Mark Knopfler, Carlos Santana,... yet he's ranked the 4th greatest guitarist of all times (wtf?) by Rolling Stone magazine. Aside from his several hits like Layla, Tears in heaven, Change the world, My father's eyes... the other songs by Clapton sux, his drawling singing voice and his signature guitar style, slow hand, have often bored me to death.

    Are you serious?

Slash better than Clapton? There's nothing that Slash does that Clapton hasn't done. They all rip through the same guitar scales and do you have any idea how sloppy Slash is live compared to Clapton.

Okay, being a guitarist myself Clapton doesn't have the fancy chops of guys like Steve Vai or Yngwie. But the magic for him lies in his blues based guitar solos and not the pop songs you listed. You listed songs he wrote in the early 90's when he went soft(exception layla). Go back to the roots, go listen to Cream, Derek and the Dominoes, hell even John Mayall and the Blue Breakers. Listen to his guitar work on Crossroads, Sunshine of your love, White room, Tales of Brave Ulysses, Cocaine,Spoonful, ..... It's not generic power chords like Slash.

I admit Clapton isn't God, but Slash is not even in the same league as Clapton.
The Rolling Stone list was more of who's of importance to the guitar and promoting it rather than technique or skill. The list is stupid, they have Jack White of the White Stripe listed higher than Eddie Van Halen.

    Bands I can't stand, Oasis.
    After Hours - Velvet Underground

To appreciate Clapton, you have to go back to his work as part of Cream and Derek and the Dominoes. It's widely recognized that the quality of his musical output sank drastically when he stopped doing drugs (as is the case for a lot of rock and roll artists ...)

I think you have to take context into account. In the early 50's, not much sounded like the Beatles and pop music itself pretty much didn't exist when they started up. So their acclaim is based as much on creating a genre in addition to the actual substance of the music.
