Athena Chu played Huang Rong in LOCH 1994, which I would consider a leading role. She was also in Wars of Bribery opposite Aaron Kwok and Romance Beyond opposite Frankie Lam.

    Red face

I thought that as soon HK return to China, TVB (is in HK) production started to go down trememdously, there were no actors that really shine anymore. I'm not talking about the pretty face, idol kind. I'm serious, I think it's the young fans that idolize some of the actors/actresses that can't act. Those that appreciate the series with content and storyline and real acting are older generation now, like us (mid 20s and older)

Another thing to note is they run out of ideas to do series, TVB doesn't do series that touch on sensitive subjects ( such as: drugs, sex, homosexuality, teenage sexuality, abortion, politics....) b/c they want it to be a family thing. In America, those kind of series are the most watched ones...

I hate to say this, I might be wrong, but I think some of the actors/actresses that can't act but keep popping their face in every series probably offer the producer(s) some extra personal benefits. I think that happen everywhere in every countries, as long you're in the entertainment business, you have to have connections and have to give in so much in order to get some fame...

See how some really bad actress got some leading roles while some really good actress are so underated?

Louisa So is from The HK Academy of Performing Arts, not TVB acting class. Before Louisa joined TVB, she was in threater and also acted in some movies. So, she already has some fame before she joined TVB. Athena Chu was the female lead in LOCH94 with Julian Cheung, and another series with Frankie Lam.

Both are from Miss HK pageants. But, whether they took acting class or not after that, I don't know. I know that some pageant contestants who didn't win actually went on to join TVB acting class. You would be surprise to know how many actresses in TVB starts from Miss HK pageant. Even Yvonne Lam from VOH is a ex-Miss HK pageant contestant.

Too long to filter out the lead actresses from the bunch of names. If u want, u can list them out for me.

The point of my question is to point out that this tradition (Miss HK playing leads) has been around for ages and not started by Stephen Chan as what sunnydayz3's post seems to indicate.

sunnydayz3 asked about TVB to go back to it's roots and promote more alumni from it's acting classes. But, the fact is, TVB has always favored Miss HK when it comes to female leads. This tradition has been around for over 2 decades already.

But, thanks for the link anyway. I'll check it out when I have time later.

Most TVB actresses are from pageants. No doubt about it

Ada Choi is an example of pageant actress who's bad at acting at first but later is one of TVB fa dan

Jessica Hsuan didn't enter through pageant. She got spotted randomly and film advert, and then join TVB to film series

Actor have more variety of origins:

Moses did modelling and spent years acting in movies before joining TVB

Kevin spent many years as a singer and acting in Taiwan dramas before come into TVB

Raymond and Chris Lai are from acting classes, they're the luckier ones who got offered meaty roles not long after graduating, other people just vanished after acting class

Bosco just randomly got spotted in the street, film advert and become a TVB host then do series

Ron is from dancing classes but Louis Koo promoted him to go into series

In what show was Ada bad in, if you don't mind my asking. The first show I saw her in was revelation of the last hero, and I thought she was decent in there, though it was quite a hateable character. She was great in the link as both the innocent girl in the beginning and a psycho towards the end. She was also good in Shade of Truth w/ Canti Lau. The thing about her was she was a newbie (back in the day) that was able to convincingly play both good and bad characters, imo. In fact, her bad characters were so convincing that I hated her for the longest time, when I was younger, lol.

As for Kevin, he was in hong kong first, then went to taiwan, then returned to hong kong.

Raymond Lam played some minor roles before he got a break in a taste of love and Step in the Past. If you recall, he played a prison guard in At the Threshold of an Era.

Except from Michael Miu, none of them are contracted to TVB.

Jimmy Au - getting bit roles. Kinda break my heart to see him getting kelefeh roles with one line only.

Savio Tsang - not sure what's happening with him, but he better look out for his diet

Gallen Lo - successful career in Mainland drama, doubt he'll go back to TVB anytime soon after Born Rich, especially costume series.

Michael Mui - wigs are bad and can cause premature balding.

A girl can only dream! Yes I seen Jimmy Au doing like extra rolls, what in the Navy! He is so handsome and talented!

Savio is getting on the heavier side, but his face is still really handsome and another good actor with small rolls.

Gallen mainland drama are not that interesting, I feel the quality of the film in mainland are fuzzy and always dark , where as tvb is much more brighter and easier on the eyes.

Michael can get hair implants if that stats to happen :X.

As for the women I would like to see Helina Tam and Akina hong have at least second lead.

sunnydayz3, TVB is no longer as dominated now compare to the golden 80s but no doubt TVB is still the leader of the industry. TVB serials are still the best overall. If you think TVB serials are bad, try mainland, taiwan, and korean serials, you will notice the difference.

It's a shame that TVB is still the only game in town. I've actually been watching Taiwanese and Korean series for several years already - I enjoy Korean series more than TVB, and recent Taiwanese movies have proven to be quality ones. Despite all the issues with TVB though, I can't shake it off. I'm part of the audience that grew up with it so it's hard to get rid of something I'm so attached to.

It's the stupid PG ERA...... it's not just TVB in Hong Kong that are making series so boring these days but it's everywhere else. Can't teach kids anything bad and therefore they make crappy shows....... And shows that are good, they will try to make it boring so that no kids will want to watch it, like Three Kingdoms for example, the battle scenes is good follow by long boring talking.

Wrestling is fake but it used to be fun and entertaining to watch but ever since they gone PG ERA, it suxk so bad.....

I think the bigger problem with TVB isn't Stephen Chan, but Virginia Lok. I'm speechless when it comes to her.

Well I only compared Journey to the West from mainland to TVB so far and Journey to the West mainland still the best best best no doubt.
