Default Places to go in Hong Kong

I'm going to HK this October. Can someone who lives in HK recommend places for me to go? Like where to shop, eat and definitely places I might run into stars. If i tell the taxi driver to take me to Lan Kwai Fong would he know what place I'm talking about?

unless u pronounce lan kwai fong as ...

    L9873209JIDJGEW KWOAJIVOHJWE FAIOUWIUANG

    otherwise, taxi cab will know.

since i do not live in HK, i probably can't help you with your choices

I'm also not residing in HK. But, I have been there a few times and spent 2-3 weeks each times. Since HK is a small city, I'm pretty familiar with the place. Here are my recommendations:

    1. Check out the HK Tourism Board website.

    2. Attractions you might want to visit

    The Peak
If you live in Kowloon, take the Star Ferry over to Central. Take the bus up to the Peak; the ride is a thrill. It's best to go around 4pm because the view of HK night lights is best at the Peak. If you have some $, you can grab a table by the window at the restaurant and enjoy the view from there.

At 7pm, take the Peak Tram down. Then head over to Yung Kee restaurant for some Chinese food. After dinner, walk to Lan Kwai Fong for couple of beers.

    Tai O, Big Buddha, NP360
From Tung Chung MTR Station, bus to Tai O, old fishing village, for some seafood or tofu-fa. Then bus up to the Big Buddha. After 30 minutes, walk over to Ngong Ping and catch the NP360 skyrail down. If you are afraid of heights, skip it. NP360 is very high, and the strong wind can blow skyrail off the cable.

    Nathan Road and Mongkok
Walk from Tsim Sha Tsui to Mongkok, passing Temple street. Stop at Soy Street and make a right. You will see the lots of people. So crowded that you are going to bump into each other. Walk around and grab some egg puffs, fish balls and others.

    Shopping Malls
Check out Ocean Center mall at Star Ferry Pier, Ferry to IFC mall in Central, and then take the street tram to Time Square in Causeway Bay.

HK is small. If you have will be there more than 3 days, head over to Macau and check out the Ruin of St. Paul and some new casinos.

Never been to HK but if I ever been there I would visit TVB, ATV and the place where they shoot ancient/wuxia series.

    The Symphony of Lights
It's basically a sound and light show that lights up the skies on Hong Kong island. The show displays different coloured lights which gets synchronised with the music playing in the background. The show has different themes too.

The best place to view this is at the Victoria Harbour along Tsim Sha Tsui. The show starts at 8pm every night.

    Useful link: Discover Hong Kong

Causeway Bay, Mongkok and Tsim Sha Tsui are all pretty good shopping hunts, you'll definitely find a lot of stuff. Eating is not a problem, you get the big restaurants and the smaller eateries, then there are the shops selling all those confectioneries and what have you. If you like dessert, look for this place called Hui Lau Shan (they have an outlet in Tsim Sha Tsui), very famous for its dessert.

You shouldn't have problems getting around. The MTR system is pretty efficient.

Finding a restaurant to eat is super easy, but finding restaurants that offer delicious food is very difficult. HK has sooOOOOOOOO many restaurants. It can be overwhelming.

Let's us know your budget and we can recommend a few restaurants for you to try.

Note: even though HK has many restaurants, it also has many people eat out. To avoid the crowd, eat before 12pm and 6pm.

I love to eat fish balls and stinky tofu, hot pot hehehe... I don't preferred to go to a nice restaurant. I love to eat out in the street like in tvb series. I also wanted to try the sandwich with i guess condense milk but i dont know how u call it in chinese. Thanks you so much guys!

We got some nice tour guides here already.

If you're in for good food, check out openrice.com. Has all the info you need for restaurants in HK. Check out the HK-style diner/cafe 港式茶餐廳 and the hotel buffets too; you won't get the same thing anywhere else.

I don't live in hongkong, but I did some search in google recently. For shopping cheap goods, go in Mong Kok, and go in the Ladies Street, also known as Ladies Market(it's how they call that place, but it is in Tung Choi Street).

They sell bags, plushes, sanrio stuffs, jewelry, etc.... When I've first seen these pictures, I turned crazy!! XD

Make some searches in google for more info. And if you come there, don't forget to bargain, cause if they see you're a tourist they will double their price and more(you probably know..)

If you like to shop for computers, games, gadgets and electrical stuff the best place to go is Wanchai Computer Center or Ap Liu Street in west Kowloon.

I was just in HK recently. It was the first time I disliked being in HK. It was so crowded and the air pollution is so bad, I just couldn't stand it much.

It wasn't like this when I went there in 2004 and the many times before that.

Here are recommendations for places not to go.

The Peak. Unless you want to line up for a couple of hours and have waves of people blocking your view once you get up there, this is not a place to go.

Mongkok. This is the most densely populated area on the planet. It was barely walkable when I was there.

Computer city at Shum Shui Po. Well, Mongkok was barely walkable, but this computer shopping mall was so crowded that moving would be a problem.

Disneyland. The entrance fee is about $300 HKD and that's not including the ride to get there and back. Disneyland was so small and pathetic.

Lan Kwai Fong. It's not like what you see on tv shows. It's actually quite dead and not as many bars as you might think.

    As for places I recommend:

If you're looking for movie stars, your best chances are at The Landmark
and the 2 Financial Centres (it's a shopping mall in 2 buildings). They're all
    located at Central Station.

Ocean Park. It's bigger than Disneyland, but... there's really not much here. Still, it was a bit enjoyable for me.

Also, I recommend going to Macau and touring the casinos as it's way more fun. They have some pretty big names in Macau sometimes (Linkin Park, Avril Lav....)
