Default Gwok Jing - expertise in use of unusual melee weapons?

Gwok Jing's original martial arts teachers, the Gong Nam 7 Freaks, were known to use a variety of unusual melee weapons. Ohr Jen Ngok used a combination staff/spear. Chu Chung used an ironclad fan. Hon Bo Kui used a horsewhip. Nam Hei Yan used some sort of lever. Cheung Ah Sang (who never got to teach Gwok Jing because he was killed off on the night of the day he met the boy) used a butcher's knife, and Cheun Gum Fat used a weights scale. Only Hon Siu Ying used a conventional sword.

Does this mean that Gwok Jing became an expert at using various unusual weapon types such as fans, horsewhips, levers and scales? We never see Gwok Jing ever use such weapons during LOCH and ROCH. Even before Gwok Jing met North Beggar Hung 7 Gung and made Hong Lung 18 Palms his default martial arts technique, he still fought barehanded (something his Freaks teachers didn't customarily do). How is it that these experts of unusual weapon types train a student who primarily fought unarmed?

They tried teaching him that kind of stuff but he sucked at it. He didn't start getting good at martial arts in general until he started learning XLSZ, and then at first he was only good at XLSZ, and then later he was so good at XLSZ he didn't have much reason to bother with a weapon.

It was said that if a person reached a high enough level, he/she can basically use any sort of weapon to high degree.

Gwok Jing is just one example of students making radically different weapon (or non-weapon) choices from their teachers. For example, the Golden Wheel Monk was famous for his metallic wheels and he used these as his primary weapons, but neither of his students, Fok Do (folding fan) or Dat Yee Ba (heavy wooden club), ever used metallic wheels themselves. West Poison Au Yeung Fung used his Snake Staff, but Au Yeung Hak used a folding fan. Among East Heretic Wong Yerk See's students, only Ching Ying used a flute in combat like he did. Yeung Gor never used ribbons in combat despite his teacher, Little Dragon Girl, being an expert in using ribbons as weapons.

It's strange how so many martial arts students end up not using their teachers' weapons skills.

His hands. He generally disdained the use of weapons.

It's been said that at the Greats level, having or not having a weapon essentially makes no difference.

At the end of ROCH, *none* of the Greats (including Yeung Gor) regularly used a weapon.

they just carry one to look cool!

i think on yg actually had a weapon on him (minus projectiles), but tats cos his weapon was one powerful sword. none of the others had anything.

HIS would be such a heavy thing and hassle to carry around.

While I agree with you about the general rule, as far as this one particular example... after he lost his right arm, YG used XLN's techniques to attack with his now empty sleeve.
