    Default Chinese traditional music

I've just re-read XAJH and re-watched Swordsman 2 which turned the mood for Chinese traditional music in me on so I decided to start a thread about this topic.
    Guqin - 古琴:
    1. Ping Sha Luo Yan -- Wild geese landing on the sandbank -- 平沙落雁
    http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=nvhKTFzQG8Y
    2. Qiu Jiang Ye Bo -- Mooring on the river in an autumn night -- 秋江夜泊
    http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=fKNeParT2eQ
    3. Liu Shui -- Flowing Water -- 流水
    http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=CRFFpxkrfGw
    Enjoy!

    Thanks.

I still prefer the Gu Zheng because as a little girl watching wuxia dramas, I wanted to grow up and learn how to play the gu zheng.

The Flower Dream is played in most of the older TVB series I watched.

^ The piece of music you posted is very famous. Its real name, however, is not The Flower Dream -- Zui Hua Yuan -- 醉花缘 as the title of the video says. In fact it is Gao Shan Liu Shui -- Water flowing down from the high mountain -- 高山流水, a masterpiece of Chinese traditional music:

I love to listen to the guzheng too. But to me seeing the modern guzheng (hahaha what an irony modern gu zheng) is a pain in the (_)(_) coz it's damn big and ugly, looking nothing like the one that Ren Yingying mastered at.

really? i quite like the mix of modern/traditional sometimes. it takes quite a new outlook on things. for example, I've usually liked the 12 girls band, though sometimes the music mixing is a bit strange.

now i just want to see people "punk" in guqin

I like the sound of those instruments, but some of those classic music just fail to impress me... They will be good if I have trouble getting to sleep though...

To Beaver & Guo Xiang: The 12 girls band's music sounds good to my ears, however I still prefer the unmixed traditional music performed by good old masters. Haha, I guess Im among the few who dont feel sleepy when listening to the original form of those ancient musical pieces. Maybe thats because Ive taken in so much rock and metal that I developed a liking for something slow and pure to balance my soul. Guqin and guzheng are perfectly fit for my need. Regarding the modern guzheng, I love its sound, but its shape is just too freakishly ugly and bulky for me to stand. The guzheng in my mind is always an elegant, fine, and fairly small instrument which was often associated with young ladies of Ren Yingying's class when they were wandering jianghu.

    Mr. Wu,

Just what is a modern Guzheng? I'm perplexed at what you're talking about.

Lol, i knew the name of the title was familiar. I remember this was played in The New Adventures of CLX with Barbara Yung and Michael Miu. Currently picturing all those images they shared together ... god I love that tv series!

To Suet Seung: The modern guzheng is the modern version of the guzheng, which is bigger and has more strings than the old ones. It was first introduced in the '50s of the 20th century or so. I dont remember exactly but I'm checking the information about it after I get home. Here is it:
    $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://img357.imageshack.us/img357/2138/modernguzhengmd5.th.jpg')$this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://img357.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif')
(modern guzheng, click to see in larger size)
The instrument is bulky and ugly, huh?

(supposed ancient guzheng , sorry, I'll post a pic of an old-time guzheng later)

Wow. This sounds really beautiful, but sad.

How can you call this bulky, it's just the way it's shaped. I like the sweet sound of the gu zheng more than the solemn sounding gu qin.

To Beaver: The Ren Yingying in the pic I posted was playing a guzheng, as you can see from the bridges under the strings. As for the RYY in the book, lemme check again. Heck, somehow my memory has been quite terrible recently.

I guess I've seen a gu zheng before, my cousin used to play gu zheng when she was a girl, but once she came here in the USA, she doesn't play it anymore. But her gu zheng, I think is still at her parents' home and it does look thinner than most "modern" guzheng I've seen.

BTW, What do you think of this mixing: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=hU4unMO9_wA

Or how about the Pipa? Do you like the Pipa?
    http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=GpetuCR1ASc

I like the Pipa and the Erhu (I like Jia Peng Fang's Erhu music CDs).

^ Yep, I like almost all kinds of Chinese traditional instruments, and the pipa is included as well. The music of the video you posted (琵琶语 -- The language of the pipa -- Pipa yu) sounds very sweet, partly due to the backing of other non-traditional instruments, and I like it. However, I would likely prefer pure pipa performances of classic pieces any day as theyre more special and unique. For example, this one:
Ba Wang Xie Jia -- 霸王卸甲 -- Xiang Wu the Conqueror unloading his armor:

I'm pretty sure Ren Yingying in the picture was playing the guzheng. Guqin is smaller in size and has significantly fewer strings. Guzheng is larger, with those bridges and many more strings.

The song(s) below is/are not (a) traditional 'Chinese' song(s), but since there re approx. 6 mil ethnic Mongol people in China now, and since Zhao Min was the bride of a Han Chinese , I think posting it/them in here is acceptable.
(Mongolian Song) Urtiin Duu -- Long song -- Chang diao -- 长调:
    http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=hcIgvxdRlIw
The song(s) is/are damn strange and etherial! Listening it/them makes me feel carefree as if I'm the young Guo Jing who was riding a horse alone in the vast steppes in northern China and Mongolia.

For those who like the Erhu I think you would like to check the song below as well. It's not a 'traditional' song but it has a couple of very cool Erhu riffs in its 2nd half: Hao Han Ge -- The song of courageous men -- 好汉歌 -- theme song of The Water Margin (Shui hu zhuan): http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=-0PYU9HucSc
