I am not positive that he loves children as in he must have some of his own. Didn't really see that in the novel.

From the beginning of LOCH, a marriage between a member of the Gwok family and a member of the Yeung family had been mooted, although never realized.

I think he would have waited. He was able to hold out for 16 years, why not 32? He was utterly devoted to her and didn't really even look at another woman except for a bit of flirting with Lu Wushuang.

He also seemed to be largely avoiding people and hiding his identity during those 16 years, so unless Guo Xiang tracked him down and pestered him all the time he probably wouldn't have given her another thought. He seemed to be a little fond of her because he took care of her as a baby, but there was certainly nothing romantic in it.
