Default DGSD...doesn't have a main antagonist?

In most literary set-ups, there is a protagonist and an antagonist. Although there might be multiple protagonists and antagonists, there's usually *one* central, dominant antagonist figure.

But in DGSD...who is the main antagonist? There are evil adversaries galore in DGSD, but none of them seems to comfortably fit the role of primary antagonist.

As there are 3 protagonists, there can be 3 antagonists. Murongs, JMZ, DCQ.

That DGSD does not limit itself to some traditional conventions, such as ONE protagonist or ONE antagonist, is one of many reasons that I believe it is Jin Yong's finest achievement.

The antagonists are the protagonists own demons, history and hang-ups in addition to the Murongs, JMZ and DCQ.

That does rob us of having a climatic good guy vs bad guy brawl though.

Well most JY novels are too fast moving to have one main villians because it be boring to have the hero fight the same person continuously. Most of the time as the story progress, villains dies and other appears as the hero evolve. Usually villian characters dont evolve or develop, heroes do so they need never challenges. imagine if OYF help the Jins earlier then usual, he would totally overpower anyone in the story because the other Greats doesnt appear yet.

DGSD is acutally 3 stories that come together later so each story have their own main villian and then everyone come together at the end.

    Says who?

Many of our finest works of literature don't follow this format. Most of the lesser works do.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the best writers can shed this formulaic approach.

Heh, lesser works as in 'Most TVB set-ups'...

Classic one is DGSD 81 (or is it 82?) which contrived Super-Murong Bo to punk Sweeper Monk and have a final showdown to finish off the 'SFX' budget.
