What's happening with Bai Zizai is incredibly funny yet there is a certain element of pathos too. Is the old duffer really insane or is he pretending to be insane so that he can dodge the summons from Xiake Island? What are his disciples to do when their master starts acting like that? The flattery that they heap on Bai Zizai recalls the praises chanted by the Sun-Moon sect disciples to their Sacred Chief Ren. They don't really believe what they're saying, in fact they probably find it just as hilarious as you and me, but have to say it with a straight face or else... Bai Zizai seems to be under the delusion of his own superiority whereas Ren Woxing, though he enjoyed the flattery, seemed still to have the self-awareness to know that his abilities didn't exceed the heavens - but tolerated and enouraged the cult of personality.
There are some pretty serious undertones to some of the howlingly funny dialogue. I can see why certain uh... authorities would have found sections like this very uncomfortable reading.
