Default Which Hong Kong singers can sing?

Haven't paid much attention to HK music industry nowadays, but, would like to check out some new and currently active singers. So, which new generation singers and currently active singers than can sing?

    new generation id go with:

    (in order for girls)
-janice vidal ... highly recommend (need 3 dots to seperate her from the rest of the group)
    .
    .
    .
-stephy tang ... quite a few super catchy songs, voice is average though (ps: her recent album sucked)
-stephanie cheng ... if u like fast songs, she has the best ones. her traffic light song (which is slow), is pretty good too
-mimi lo ... i will actually put mimi lo as 4th. she is not really promoted and not really famous or popular, but she does have 2 albums and her voice and singing is solid. she re-sang many old songs, so she doesnt have 1 of her own songs, so that is why i place her here.
-vincy chan ... decent, kinda like joey yung when she first started (ps: joey yung was good, but right now she is pretty bad)
-kary ng ... she has a huge range of singing, in terms of high pitch and low pitch, and she has a different style than everyone else like she does a lot of rock music, but i havent found any song i liked (as in getting over 15 plays on my playlist) from her.
-denise ho ... all her songs sucks and i dont really recommend her, but if u are a person that like a strong powerful voice instead of every other hk artists that sing in a super high voice, then try her

(in NO order for guys, dont really like any of the recent guy singers, but i'll give a critique of the popular ones)
-eason chan ... his singing is pretty dam good, but of all his songs (which is a lot), theres not many catchy ones.
-hins cheung ... highly overrated (as in ppl thinking he is on eason chan's level) imo because he only got like 10 good songs and thats about it and his voice is nothing too special.
-justin lo ... other than his first 2 albums, hes pretty much overrated as well although i have to admit that he has a different style in his singing and have potential. i think he got over promoted too fast, like releasing 2-3 albums a year.
-raymond lam ... in all non-biasness, his singing is pretty smooth, but he sings too high for a guy which is not my taste.

then there is boyz, khalil fong, jaycee chan, jason chan, and a whole lot of other male singers that just sing slow pop song in a very high voice and breathe loudly after every sentence that i dont even want to critique about

Is Stephy Tang the same as Stephy (or something like that) Deng? E.g. the one who has a song called “lightbulb”? I saw one of her vids on youtube only cuz I was watching pro singers screwing up in live performances. She can't sing very well.

I think Eason has a lot of catchy songs.

Having catchy songs only means the singer is getting a push from the bosses. Wouldnt surprise me if she was "dating" a powerful guy in the record company or someone who has influence on said powerful guy.

Of the female HK singers that I know of since I started listening (mostly 90's), Cass Pang was the only one I was particularly impressed with. Sally Yeh is good too, but she wasn't that big anymore when I was paying attn.

then theres sammi cheng, kelly chen, and miriam yeung that are reaching there for me

then i have jade kwan, candy lo and joey yung (who all started out solid, but for the past 5 years, they have been going downhill)

I have a bad first impression of Jade Kwan and have not think very highly of her singing ever since, eventhough she got many praises.

When I first heard her sing years ago, she was singing live in JSG. I have to turn my volumn up and down several times when listening to her sing. I felt that her transition from soft to loud was too abrupt and too large a difference. No smooth transition. In some parts, she was so soft that I have to rise the volumn of my TV, then she went and sing the chorus and it was so loud, I need to turn the volumn down again, then she turn soft again. Ever since that first impression, I think Jade Kwan is overrated and never like her.

I've actually bought Hins' album after listening to his 悔過詩 (Yes, I bought the album for that 1 song). So, I've listened to several Hins' songs liao. I've also heard his live singing in youtube. Hins is not up to the Eason's level yet, but, he's a good singer, nonetheless. His voice can go very high, even can sing opera.

I think Raymond Lam sings better when he's still singing TVB themesongs. I don't know why in his new songs (that was released in his album), he's so breathy. His voice use to be really solid. Check out the songs in sing in older TVB series and the songs in his album. Singing style different liao.

Any more recommendations? These seem to be the more famous ones. I've watched some JSG episodes and there were tons of singers I didn't recognise.

What about girls like Hotcha, Kay Tse, Ivana Wong, Vincy Wong? How is their singing?

Any other good male singers other than the one that has been mentioned?

I am kinda your opposite. I've always preferred male singers in HK music and female singers in American music. I can admit (online at least... but I'll deny in RL ) that I like Celine Dion's singing (even though she's Canadian I count her as American since she has albums here too). Also Whitney Houston and Avril Lavaigne et al. I guess it's cuz the female singers in the west have more powerful voices in general than HK ones.

What the heck happened to Cass anyway? I know she isn't really that good looking compared to the others. She just kinda disappeared after a while.

Is Kelly Chen one of Edison's "ladies"? I thought I saw something about that but nothing materialized.

For people who can read chinese, ok.99.com has a section where people can sing their own versions and upload them. I listened to some while I was working today, and most of them were quite impressive, especially the ones doing Jacky and Beyond. I recommend checking it out. One dude recorded and uploaded over 1000 songs. I dunno how he had all this time but he was good.

hotcha is basically twins but 3 girls and a little bit worse (which is pretty bad since twins is pretty bad). kay tse is a decent singer, but her songs arnt catchy enough for me. ivana wong sings really slow songs and sound very "cute," i wouldnt recommend it but shes quite popular actually. vincy wong i never heard of.

u can also try elanne wong, i think shes not too bad for a new singer (basing on my ratings of 1-10, where janice is a 8, vivian chow is a 10, stephy is a 5, i will put her in 3, basically same rating as kary ng, hotcha is 0.5)

i never liked male singers except for jacky cheung, andy lau, hacken lee, alan tam, old andy hui (before 2000), danny chan, and some leslie cheung/ some leon lai and some aaron kwok and some eason and some hins, some sam hui, some roman tam and some ronald cheng

ok maybe i do, but i dont like any of the recent male singers. i hate how they try to sing in high note instead of a deep note.

i heard cass married and went to canada or something like that, but she should be enjoying like right now as we speak

kelly chen was associated with edisen, but nothing happened between the 2

Yeah, I notice that nowadays, male singers tend to sing in higher tone compared to yesteryears, even in the west.

It's kinda sad that in recent years HK music companies choose singers base on look instead of singing ability. But, it seems to be going back to talent slooowwwly now. At least, there's Hins and Ivana who can compose songs.

Listening to Sammul's songs now. So wish he can release an album. I really like his voice.

Vivian Chow was hot (I remember reading she was a nerd in high school) but I don't remember her singing being superior to others.

We don't really know whether Kelly and Edison ever did it, so we can't say for sure nothing happened between the 2. Knowing what's known of Edison's cool record, I would bet she is on his list if I had to bet.

Kelly has dated her husband (then boyfriend) for 15 years before they get married.

Let us go back to discussing singers' songs and singing and leave their private life alone. At least, leave the Edison scandal in Edison's thread.

    Thanks

I don't understand what they're singing, but my favorites are:

    Kelly Chen
    Faye Wong
    Gigi Leung
    Candy Lo

I also really like Taiwanese singer Vivian Hsu.

I really like Vivian Lai and Linda Wong, but they are both retired now.
Respect other people's opinions and views. If we learn how to do that than all of these fights and arguments will not occur.
