Stills from new series “Cuo Dian Yuan Yang”

Cold male and happy-go-lucky female, season MCXVI

Known as “ice cream literature” for her soft and sweet tales, Xi Juan’s stories were the frontrunners of fanfic-like literature before there were fanfics. Two of her novels are being made into a new Hunan TV series featuring a cast of first-time leads. Cuo Dian Yuan Yang (Accidental Cupid, literally wrongly picking lovebirds) combines two stories around the Shi family, one of them with a timetravelling beginning that was cut out.

New My Fair Princess’ Princess Qing’er actress Zhao Liyin plays a tacky but clever maid who replaces her mistress to be married to the Shi family so that she can spy on them, while fellow My Fair Princess actress Zhou Fang plays a policeman who is actually a girl in disguise. Those two are paired with the first and second Shi son, respectively. Meanwhile, the third son Guo Dongdong (the musician from Modern New Species) has fallen for a courtesan, and the fourth daughter for her childhood friend Leng Gang (Bu Bu Jing Xin’s 10th prince Ye Zuxin).

    I love Han Dong!

Seems like a sweet light hearted series...kind of positive break away from the tragedies of BBJX and QSHF. Thank goodness.

You already saw this? Haha..I just came across this series. I'm confused about the first couple, was the girl a maid or the actual young mistress? Of course, I haven't seen the whole first ep yet.

Zhao Li Ying's character is a daughter of the merchant (she's either the youngest or the 2nd to youngest), but she was raised as a maid....it has to do with who her mother is, but that's going to be revealed in future episodes. I can't recall if everyone knew she was the merchant's daughter or not in the beginning, but she knows, the merchant knows and I think the 1st wife knows as well.

This is a really adorable but somewhat improbable show. I quite enjoy it...Zhao Li Ying and the eldest brother has great chemistry...also, him being sooo very tall and her so small allows for a lot of great princess-carry scenes. For a show that is set in the ancient chinese timeframe, this show allows for a lot of modern "intimate" scenes, which is both strange but amusing. I like part 1 more than part 2 just because the oldest couple is my favorite of the 3, but part 2 is still watchable.

Both part 1 and part 2 are fully eng subbed on http://www.viki.com/
Just search Cuo/Xi Dian Yuan Yang
How come most 江湖 (jiānghú) wanderers never worry about money? I wonder how a 大俠 (dàxiá) make a living...does meddling in people's business and righting wrongs pay well?

I'm with you. I just finished watching it in 6 days. I like the Wu Ji and Huan'er pairing most out of the three. It's just the whole series seem troubled with keeping things consistent because the 1st part and the 2nd part seem like two separate series that they just work hard to keep two parts together, thus effecting the characters' personalities and etc.

Like with the first series, I felt like it was fine that the oldest brother couple was fine, but the writer sorta mess it up by making Huan'er distrustful of Wu Ji and it was sorta executed poorly with them fighting...they had so many more episodes so I feel like the writers just create more problems where there need not be. I like the couple a lot and there are some parts of the story I would have done differently. As is, the writers could have done more to develop the characters, I like Huan Er and some audiences just don't get filial piety and keep judging her loyalty to her parents esp. her father. But for the most part, I thought it would be revealed that she wasn't really his daughter, but oh well.

Wu Hen was great as a love rival, but I wish they had done better at connecting the first half to the 2nd half of the series(sequel). I would have liked to see the fourth sister and Leng Geng again in the latter series. Wu Hen and Yu Shi were a nice couple too, but I feel like I want Wu Ji and Huan'er to be in the story a lot as well as them two. They seem to have less screen time and at times Wu Ji doesn't have enough screen time as Huan Er. I also feel like there wasn't enough scenes to develop Wu Hen and Yu Shi's romance or maybe I sped through too much. I really did not enjoy the scenes between Wu Jie and Qiu Yu or MuRong Fu or any of the corrupted officials. I can't quite describe it, but the sequel was just not engaging. It felt imbalanced. The same characters were there, but the story did not connect well and it did not seem like a smooth weaving of the first and second part.

One thing I like to mention is Huan Er being such a match-maker sister-in-law was so out of character. I don't know if you notice it but it just didn't seem like her at all. Maybe it's just the writers way of keeping the oldest brother couple in the 2nd series. With a really talented writer, they would be able to just make one series and involve all the romance of the three brothers or rather four siblings and juggle the whole revenge family plot fine, but the writers kind of failed the characters by splitting it up and so as much as i like this series, I would totally want a do-over and fix this drama myself...but haha that might have to be another time in a fan-fic, which I have no time to work on.

Well, Huan'Er and Wu Ji were practically married or married, so their intimate scenes were fine. The part 2, the two brothers had very intimate scenes that were not right with the time, but we will just let it pass because their love has become full bloomed. I guess that's one of the reasons Huaner/Wu Ji coupling works well...they're married, they can fall in love afterwards and do whatever they please because they are already married. Would've been nice to see Huan'er pregnant earlier on in part 2 and have the baby towards the end of part 2 and the whole family together in the ending scene of part 2.

Oh Suet Seung, don't take this the wrong way but you are my drama-watching soulmate, lol. 100% agree with your reaction to the series. If I recall correctly, the nanny and her daughter and Huan'er's maid were also MIA in part 2. Didn't mind the fact that nanny is out of the picture but I liked the maid/companion character. When watching part 2, I kinda skipped until i see signs of Huan'er and WuJi due to my bias.

Something that bothers me is that I can't recall why WuJi was so against WuJie getting together w/ the prostitute girl. Was it because of status and her blemished past? I mean, didn't he have history w/ a prostitute, too (as shown in part 1)? Hypocrite much?

You mean Ma Xian Mei? I think in the early years, she had helped Shi Wu Ji somehow involving his revenge against whoever killed his parents or maybe it was the business, but she probably sold her body and used her body to help him... which Wu Ji probably did not want her to do, but it was already done. Therefore, Wu Ji felt indebt to her and promised to make her his concubine if ever he marries his first wife. He was only involved with her out of obligation rather than true romance.

A lot of things was out of character in Part 2. Wu Ji was against Wu Jie marrying Qiu Yu as his wife rather than just a concubine.

Qi Ji (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Qi_Ji) doesn't have many lead roles like this series...I kept waiting for Huan er to make him new clothes so he'd wear something not black or navy blue. But it didn't happen.

Now I'm watching the new Legend of Hua Mulan...and I'm so in love with the songs and background music. I know the voices of the actors are probably dubbed to make it all sound better, but I really love the strong male voices of General Xie and stuff. Right now, Mulan sounds so girlie, I wonder how she ever will crossdress successfully. It's interesting how Cynthia Yeung/Khan once played Mulan years ago and now she's playing Mulan's mother. Lots of veteran actors I recognize in older Taiwanese dramas. Dylan Kuo still looks like a younger Aaron Kwok from Revelation of the Last Hero.
