Default Is it actually more fun/interesting to debate the skills of *non*-Greats/Elites?

I don't share PJ's fetish for ELOC, but one thing I've long felt about comparing wuxia characters' martial arts skills is that it's often more interesting/fun to debate the relative skills of non-Great/Elite fighters. The thing about Greats/Elites is that in any given generation, there's only (at most) a half dozen of them around, and they really don't fight each other that often. When they do fight, for various reasons, they are usually shown to be on par with one another...which generally results in stalemate after stalemate after stalemate. Conversely, there are such ridiculous extremes of "SuperElites" such as the time-stopping and universe-inverting characters in Gu Long, which defeats all purpose of discussion and debate because who's going to give competition to THEM? Jin Yong characters such as the Janitor Monk and Dook Goo Kau Bai, though not time-stopping or universe-inverting, are equally futile to discuss because they're effectively invincible.

But with lesser characters such as the Four Great Evils, the flunkies of Mo Yung F'uk, the various Beggar's Union Elders, the Gong Nam 7 Freaks, the Cheun Jen 7 Disciples, the various Jin Empire and Mongol Empire flunkies, etc., there's actually more fertile ground for discussion because while powerful, no one among them is ridiculously overpowered.

In a lot of ways, I really agree. For example, my favorite characters to discuss in XAJH, aside from the obvious (RWX), are not the powerhouses; Feng Buping who practiced the 'Quick Blizzard Sword' (he intrigues me the most), and Mo Da (Mr. Not Big) the Night Rain over Xiao and Xiang.

Jinyong tries so hard to maintain parity amongst his Greats that it's just not that interesting debating their relative martial arts sometimes, but I'll ALWAYS be up for a discussion about how well Feng Buping would have done had not Linghu Chong stifled him and his technique.

I agree, especially in that lessor characters tend not to be equal - evil QZ 7 have clear discrepancy between each individual member, whereas greats are intended to be equal in different novels, which is really bs to me.

Of course! Definitely more interesting. Its the sub-elites who get all the crazy unique never-replicated feats like :

Transmiting inner force over the air.

Reaching the stage of Divinity in Energy Manipulation.

    Flinging heads over mountains.

    Removing hair with inner force.

    Being equal to 10,000 men.

Creating foor imprints on the floor without moving.

Redirecting incoming strike energy to the earth.

Ah, these feats are indeed magnificent. One may not have guessed that they could be performed by SubElites:

    Not sure about this one.

Don't you feel that Greats being able to toy with these characters are even more impressive?

And Sweeper Monk can toy with XYS + XF who combined should be equal to 10 DYQ = 100,000 men.

But he is still pretty boring...
