It's a lantern, which the GLs actually call a "power battery."

Which is why almost all the GLs leave theirs at home/in their lockers, sometimes to their detriment.

Many GL stories have had the GLs run out of juice at the most inconvenient of times, and their batteries are often a continent or even half a galaxy away.

PIS. Such brilliant minds with such access to powerful technology and resources aren't able to make the damn thing more portable in a "non-gay" way?
Read the latest chapters of Coiling Dragon at Wuxia World!

I think the DC Comics writers were painfully aware that the set of abilities they had given the Green Lanterns made them effectively omnipotent. What could you do with a character who arguably could defeat even Superman by just using his/her power ring to turn everything around him into Kryptonite (yes, Green Lanterns can do that)?

So DC contrived several limitations on the GLs to make them powerful, but less than omnipotent.

The power rings description on wiki makes them sound a bit like Tolkien's elven rings. The elven rings had a more interesting history, and more logical limitations though, being designed for a specific purpose that didn't necessarily mesh with worldly power.
