Kiu Fung, Pau But Tung, and other measuring sticks of martial arts in DGSD.

The first concrete indication in DGSD of how awesome Kiu Fung's martial arts skills were was when he very casually leveled both Pau But Tung and Fung Bo Ngok, two of Mo Yung F'uk's henchmen who had previously been established as very tough martial artists in their own right.

A few chapters before Kiu Fung first appeared, Pau But Tung very easily demolished those ruffians (one surnamed See Ma and the other surnamed Tsui) who had taken over Ah Chu and Ah Bik's river house. Pau defeated these ruffians just as easily as Kiu Fung would defeat Pau a few chapters later (or at least, so it seemed in DGSD '81).

So was Pau But Tung as far ahead in martial arts of that See Ma guy and that Tsui guy as Kiu Fung was of Pau?

IIRC, they submitted when MRF bribed them with the lost secret stances of their clan- not due to the martial superiority of MRF's 4 assistants.

Yes. Bao Butong was god-like to the Qingcheng disciples and Qin Family Stockade. He easily defeated a few, and didn't seem like he would have trouble exterminating few dozens of them. Had they all ganged up on him, it could have been like a "weak man's Juxian Zhuang."

Judging by the fear that Bao Butong injected into his opponents, it's every bit as impressive as SWORD GOD's later exertion of tremor into the Twin Goblins of Pearl Cliff (of course, I personally think SWORD GOD's opponents were tougher). Bao was so ahead of them that even though they greatly outnumbered him, none dared to think about attacking!

Most people don't think of Bao Butong as a great martial artist but he was really god-like in that scene.

Too bad I watched the serials before reading DGSD but if I was a first time reader I would probably get fooled by this scene of Bao's prowess, WYY's knowledge and the MRB hype from Yellow Brow into thinking MRF was some godly fighter.
