Default President Barack Obama - his performance thus far

Well, since the 2008 U.S. presidential election has been history for more than three months now, it's appropriate to retire that thread and do whatever discussion we do about President Barack Obama's performance in his administration here. This thread will likely be active for years.

The question is... Can he live up to David Palmer?

There's no doubt Obama as a person is more qualified than Bush. Unfortunately for him, he's inheriting the worst economic mess since FDR took over. His economic team's response to the bank industry has been disappointing. Nothing new, and nothing concrete, at least in what's been revealed so far.

But it's still better than what the Republicans have done. Incredibly, the LA gouvernor Jindal actually said that big government was the problem after Obama's speech.

Obama should definitely realize by now that Republicans don't care about bi-partisenship, they care about winning the elections. They definitely want the recession to last another 2 years because then they can say that the Democrats are useless, which is true to an extent as it's with Republicans too.

The worst nightmare for Republicans would be if Obama and Democrats are in fact able to turn the recession around quickly, before 2010 elections.

Read this article to see the sort of clarity of vision and intellectual firepower the current President has compared to his predecessor.

If George W. Bush had had half of Obama's acumen, the nation's economy might not be in such dire condition today.

It may not matter if the Congress can't get some sort of working relationship going on. It's politics as usual even in such rough times. Both Dems and Reps are to blame.

Lenin would love Obama and Khrushchev would be laughing and saying 'We won!'

Somebody has been listening to Rush Limbaugh too many times.

Speaking of that Limbaugh, I heard on the radio that he is now the face of the Republican party. Is that true or is that just liberals looking to paint the Rep Party as being hardcore rightwing?

I am asking the Republicans on this forum.

oh by the way, egalitarian societies are supposed to lead to better health for people, whereas societies with a wide gap between the rich and poor, which is what we have in the US, is bad.

FDR and the Dems tried all of the social engineering tricks they could dream up, including the destruction of wealth. They only succeeded in prolonging the Great Depression for years until Japan, Germany and Italy started WWII and wartime spending ended the Depression. Social re-engineering won’t work this time either.

This post is a perfect example of a profound lack of understanding about Keynesian economics. The failure here, of course, is not recognizing that "wartime spending" as they are, are still government spending. So instead of spending hundreds of billions of dollars to drop bombs on brown people, that money could be better spent to reform the health care system to ensure affordable access for all.

It's also a fact that government policies started under FDR eventually ushered into being the greatest expansion ever of the middle class by the 50's. So again, too much Limbaugh, but not enough realism.

I think Limbaugh of the conservative is similar to Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Jeremiah Wright of the liberal.

In US/Canada, the problem is not the system but the people. There are lot of people just live for the moment instead of live for the better tomorrow. As you can see, many many poor imigrants with absolutely nothing to begin with but with the conservative lifestyle (live below the mean) they become wealthy (middle class) after a decade or two. On the other hand, the people who live for the moment with ten of thousand of credit card debt and go for payday loan regularly will always stay in the bottom. The government only can do so much to close the gap, I read somewhere that the top 1% of americans pay like 40% of the total tax. The bottom 50% pay like 3%.

Unless the head of the DNC, or prominent Democratic senators, or even president Obama himself, have called those three to apologize for criticism about their incendiary rhetoric, then this comparison falls flat. It's funny how much power a bloated windbag with a history of drug addiction and tattered martial affairs have so much power over Republican politicians ......... their party has moved from the party of Lincoln to the party of Limbaugh.

Social re-engineering won't work because no wealth is created. No matter how much handout they receive from the government, it won't last because they will blow them away and demanding for more and more. Social re-engineering only discourage people from hard work because the government will take most of what they created away and give them to people who refuse to work. Why would people want to work 80 hours/week if they are not much better than people on welfare?

Exactly what i was going to type.

It's weird how he differentiates social spending with wartime spending. If it is for killing it must be better I guess. People also seem to forget that during WW2, society in the US was a very model of socialism. Take the "Victory Gardens" as an example, the us gov. asked citizens to plant various vegetables for national consumption. These gardens produced up to 40 percent of all the vegetable produce being consumed nationally

I don’t even watch the Rush L. show and much prefer Jim Cramer as a source for financial news and insight.

This paragraph makes no sense when it comes to wealth creation. The failure of our economic structure is fundamentally due to the build-up of phantom wealth as a result of the hijacking of the system by the financial sector.

The hijacking of the system by the financial sector and the build up of phantom wealth was always inherent in the system, but was magnified during the last few decades. Phantom wealth are defined here as the paper wealth generated by speculative trading of over-leveraged derivatives, creative balance sheets and manipulated reports earning that drive up equities and created asset bubbles and so on. All these phantom wealth lack any true intrinsic value, but the parasites that generated them were able to reap tangible rewards if they were smart enough to cash them out early. The parasites here aren't just the financial sector, but also your average consumers who're willing to borrow and spend more than they could afford. This economic mirage/infection became a global problem when technological innovation make it possible for easier credit and consumer goods to flow between export-heavy regions into places where the accumulation of debts are encouraged.

If you listen to Jim Cramer for financial advice, you should really watch this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBI4LymBB8I

You should be buying things and accept that they are overvalued, but accept that they're going to keep going higher. I know that sounds irresponsible, but that's how you make the money.
Lol, if I have listened to Cramer, I would have a million dollars by now, given that I have started with 100 millions.

Yay! Stem cell research funding is back!

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090309/...ama_stem_cells

And of course, this is the Republican party's response (quoted from article):

House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, criticized Obama, saying in a statement that the president had "rolled back important protections for innocent life, further dividing our nation at a time when we need greater unity to tackle the challenges before us."

    LOL.

Embrionic stem cell research may be a dead end since a method of making adult skin cells into stem cells has just been discovered. Of course that won’t stop the Dems from throwing bags of money at a potential dead end.
