Is currently working on a short essay on migration, and I'm supposed to give the definition of 'migrate' and 'emigrate'.
I apologise for my poor understanding of English, but I don't really understand the difference of the two words because their meanings are like... SIMILAR? I really couldn't tell the difference of the two words.
According to dictionary.com:
Migration - 1. to go from one country, region, or place to another.
Emigration - to leave one country or region to settle in another; migrate: to emigrate from Ireland to Australia.
Okay. So from this I gathered that 'migration' means like you move around but do not settle, while 'emigration' means you move but settle down to the place you moved to.
But my school textbook's given examples include the moving of Europeans to the New World (the Americas) and Aboriginals from Asia to Australia. So that dismantled whatever dictionary.com says, 'cos the Europeans and Aboriginals settled down in the Americas and Australia!
I can't even seem to find a good book that gives decent explanations for these two terms.
Any help would be much appreciated.
