Hmm, interesting. Not to be mean, but the thing is at his age now, can he finish the story?

If he does start a new one, I hope he writes a detailed plot outline for anyone that decides to finish it, should JY turn up his toes before it’s done.

I think JY should compile his Ultimate List of Powerful Characters. Or maybe not... should keep the speculations going.

I bet it will be the story of a boy with a monkey's tail who falls onto earth in a space capsule and is raised by an old man.

Let's say that he does complete this new novel...but then the main question will be...will he stick around long enough for revisions?

Maybe he can do an alternative universe, which includes all of his characters from previous works in an imaginery China.

So maybe HR will end up with YG and GJ with XLN... Wahahahaha.

i think he'll have enough experience to get it right (or close enough) the first time now. plus he's not limited to writing in a newspaper so no restrictions etc.

Hate to play the cynic, but does anyone else suspect that Jin Yong might be taking out the pen again purely for financial reasons? The economic crisis has hit everyone hard. Who knows what the crisis has done to Mr. Jin's assets? He's been adamantly against writing new wuxia novels since his retirement in the late 1960s. What else could bring him out of that 40-year dormancy other than dire financial need?

If he really needs money (how much $ can a 90 yr old guy blow on hookers and drugs anyway?), just licensing his characters and titles to other authors or getting someone to ghost write for him will probably bring in quite a few million. He doesn't even have to lift his own pen (keyboard).

He has been following our discussions and has noticed that we need new stuff to fuel them.
You do know that it is just fiction, dont you?

But he's been making editions here and there every now and then. It might be an indication that he does want to write something but is unwilling to break his vow. So perhaps it is the financial crisis that changed his mind and decided to go for it instead.

    Thank you for posting that.

I think the wording of the article itself is ambiguous enough to suggest that JY may just have meant he might do yet another set of revisions, rather than write a whole new novel (as the article's title implies).

It'd be nice to see a major JY novel written outside the context of serialisation, which is the source of most of the flaws in his work. But at the same time, the man is 85 years old, rich, and a respected public figure, and he probably thinks he has nothing left to prove. If I were him, I'd want to focus my limited energy on pinching the bottoms of starstruck fangirls (or whatever it is that famous 85-year-old wuxia novelists do) rather than slave away endlessly over a PC.

As for the suggestion that he's been forced out of retirement by the financial crisis, I doubt it. I like the image of him frantically trying to scribble out an entire novel before the debt collectors outside succeed in bashing his front door down, but unless he gambled everything he owned (and his left kidney, perhaps) with Bernard Madoff, I find it hard to believe he'd really be so destitute. There are surely easier ways for him to get his hands on quick cash.

    1) It is not inconceivable that JY or any rich HK ppl can run into financial crisis over the last year or so, the newspapers are full of singers and actors who had lost a fair bit of their savings. So, it's possible. But we don't know, and if we don't know, then we really are just speculating.

    2) I agree with owbjhx that revision sounds more likely than a full set of novels, given that there have been rumors about his planned 4th edition revision for the past 18 months or so.

    3) It would be interesting if JY actually wrote a new novel. I doubt that it would be as fun or successful as his other novels, but certainly his writing and experience in life would have matured in a newer form which would frustrate his fans.
