I haven't read every single JY novel... but of the ones I have, DY is pretty up there as far as worst protagonist.

His WWY stalking, his illogical thought processes, the kotowing 1000 times to a statue... then saying he will practice BMSG and LBWB only because the statue instructed him to do so-- wtf? His lack of value in his own life even though he is the most likely sucessor to the great nation of Dali. Everything about him was terrible.

Again, I almost stopped reading DGSD becaue of DY.

*edit-- DY is not really the worst as much as the most annoying!

I thought that had to be Chan Ga Lok. In my ten years of reading wuxia forums, I have yet to encounter anyone saying anything good about Chan Ga Lok. I see good words for Deun Yu from time to time, but never Chan Ga Lok.

Chan Ga Lok takes the Most Widely Reviled Wuxia Protagonist title, I think.

I'm not familiar with the story of BOOK & SWORD: GRATITUDE & REVENGE, but from what I've read about the guy...I don't think I dislike him that much either. He strikes me as an uninteresting character more than anything else.

For the WORST beginning (ALL 8? Chapters of it!), it would be DGSD. Until Qiao Feng appeared, I had to grit my teeth and sit through so many chapters of Duan Yu and his crap.
I absolutely agree with both parts of this sentiment.
Read the latest chapters of Coiling Dragon at Wuxia World!

Good grief!! I'm currently reading DGSD and only got about a couple of chapters. Yup, he is annoying. And based on what I read here, he's not getting better.

But I know I can finish DGSD, cause there are som interresting characters ahead (JMZ) that I look forward to. After going through OTG, which was boring, I think I can handle a few annoying DY chapters.
You do know that it is just fiction, dont you?

I can't agree with all the CJL-haters. I've read Book & Sword three times and I just don't get why everyone dislikes him so much. He's reviled for being human and having feelings. (shrug)

But I will admit that the opening of Book & Sword is not one of JY's best. It starts out following Li Yuanzhi, who then becomes a really minor character after the introduction of the Red Flower Society characters. Very disappointing.

    1) The main criticism of CJL is his naive nature, and his trust that his "brother" would do his part. The second main criticism that many of us have is that this man, is heartless enough to sacrifice his true love, and this is not the only time he deserted a woman in the novel either. He had the worst characteristics of WXB without too many redeeming features.

    2) Book and Sword's introduction isn't too bad. However, to be fair, it resembles a lot of Wang Dulu's Magic Crane, Crouching Tiger etc.

Yes!! I was so disappointed after seeing the movie when I found that the novel had never been translated. I'm still surprised that no US publisher did that when the movie did so well.
