That seemed to be the case for GJ anyway. That he learned so quickly was attributed to QZ internal energy base. Plus the theories of QZ internal energy is related to the YJ based XL18P.

This doesn't invalidate SHL's effort. If he had poor instructions and internal energy that wasn't particularly compatible, the combination of the two leading to a fire deviation isn't farfetched at all.

Furthermore, GJ's 2 years of QZ training is superior to most other people's. Not only was he personally trained by Ma Yu (the best QZ master at the time in terms of internal energy), GJ's character was also very well suited to QZ meditation.

One thing to keep in mind is that Shi Huolong fire deviated 20 years ago due to insufficient internal energy. Over the past 20 years, he should have cultivated much more internal energy, and that's the version we saw fight Cheng Kun. Maybe at present day HSDS, he has enough internal energy to learn XL18Z. Who knows?

But wasn't he crippled due to the fire deviation. I thought he was still crippled when he fought Cheng Kun. The question is could he have healed himself by cultivating more internal energy or was it permanent.

Yes, he was crippled due to the fire deviation, which the novel stated he had recovered 90% by the time he fought Cheng Kun. That said, he could still accumulate internal energy during those 20 years of being crippled.

This is a partial aside but one thing QZ internal energy was known for (which was also one of the reasons it was considered so orthodox) is that someone training it pretty much has no chance of fire deviating.

Most other advanced internal energy methods and even many not-so-advanced ones can lead to that in various degrees whether from over-exerting or being a risk that comes with the technique normally. With QZ internal, the implication is that the worse that can happen is that you won't progress. Even 9 Yin has a chance of fire deviation that's increased by over-exertion (indirectly implied by the portion that lets the 9 Yin user unseal ones own accupoints that were sealed by fire deviation).

This extreme orthodoxy could also play a part in GJ learning XL18P without issue.

Therefore, my personal opinion is that although Guo Jing's internal energy reserve was certainly inferior to that of Shi Huolong, the quality of his internal energy was much higher, as it was that of pure, orthodox Quanzhen internal energy, as transmitted to him by the head disciple of Wang Chongyang, as opposed to whatever mishmash crap Shi Huolong knew. This allowed him to do more with less. Don't look down on Quanzhen internal energy! Hong Qigong also says that,
