Icy Beverages

Speaking of Western traditions, the thing that really gets me is putting a bunch of ice in your beverage! Why the heck do Westerners do it even in the winter?

I was told that women who drink ice water have higher rate of miscarriage and other birth defects in their babies.

I'm guilty of doing this.

My mom highly discourages it because of the reasons you've listed, and because it's supposedly bad for your teeth. But I can't drink an icy beverage if it's... well, not "icy". For instance, I can't drink soda without ice even if it has been refrigerated for some time because it's just not cold enough for me. It just tastes A LOT better with ice in it, imo. Also, most drinks (sodas, juices etc.) are too sweet for my liking, so adding ice helps lessen the sweetness. For a certain period, I even added ice to my milk.

I really need to break this bad habit, though.

actually, i was just watching food detectives on tv the other day, and drinking colder water actually helps you burn extra calories. not a lot, but it's better than warm water.

but yeah, i drink everything with ice. water, soda, juice, milk, you name it anything that is liquid form. i even put ice in my ramen soup at times to make it the 'cold ramen' style. and when i'm bored and just watching tv or something and want something to chew on i either get out the frozen fruit tray, just fruits cut up and thrown in the freezer, or just a couple cubes of ice. i just love the taste of ice! it smells like fresh clay/dirt and i love that smell!
