In most wuxia stories there always some character that are blind or will become blind later. It's being blind consider to be most horrific and tragic, but some manage to recover like in DGSD and FFSM while some like in SPW never healed their eyes.

With all the swords and flying projectiles... having only one or two blind people is lucky for the 'profession' already.

I think people rather lose arm rather then losing their sight. Jin yong really favor creating blind villian in his stories.

The thing is, they can lose any part of their bodies. But eyes are a good part to attack, I must say. It practically takes away the fighting ability of your opponent.
