    Default Meaning of Exclammation Marks

Hi, sorry if there is such a thread. In an email, if a person ends with "Thanks!", what is the person implying?

Are you kidding? The person just mean "thank you" with no other implications. You would have a better case if the guy used a question mark.

LOL! It's just used to punctuate sentences that show alot of emotion. "Thanks!" at the end of the email would imply they are greatly indebt to you for whatever reason.

i end emails that way. most people use best regards, but many times, i don't wish to give them any regards. -_- certainly not the best ones. so i say "thanks!" as a fake, positive way to end an email. most of the time, i'm using it sarcastically, ahha.

it depends on the context - when expressions become overboard, it can indicate sarcasm (which includes, but not restricted to, exclamation marks) but in the general sense, i would not attribute negative connotations to just an exclamation mark.

Agreed. Generally an exclamation mark is used to indicate emphasis, not sarcasm. Lack of an exclamation mark might imply a certain level of indifference, so including one typically shows genuine feeling.

Depending on the person you are typing to, lack of exclamation mark can also indicate formality.
