# Thread: the issue with beauty...

1. ## the issue with beauty...

beauty is really in the eyes of the beholder, each person has a different sense of beauty.

i thought and was taught to think so (in a webpage related way) that beauty had more to do with the symmetry of a product or item.

wikipedia entry to symmetry
Symmetry generally conveys two primary meanings. The first is an imprecise sense of harmonious or aesthetically-pleasing proportionality and balance; [1] such that it reflects beauty or perfection. The second meaning is a precise and well-defined concept of balance or "patterned self-similarity" that can be demonstrated or proved according to the rules of a formal system: by geometry, through physics or otherwise.

this is something i agree with and apply as a basis of beauty.

take Britney Spears for one, she is quite beautiful no matter how she acts and it can be proven such with a frontal shot.

this is done by cutting a person's face in half and mirror it to the other side, if the final product is still the same face then that person is symmetrically pleasing and can be considered generally attractive to the population.

i would like to put this to the test.

there are many of us on this forum who argue over the beauty of certain actress and if you really do believe them to be so i would like to ask you to do this simple test.

the pictures you use have to be frontal shots without any tilting and best if they don't smile. the bodies can be off but its the face we're looking at.

i have done a few to show the results...these actresses aren't exactly my fav but i do feel they are pretty in their own rite. before and after shots.

Kristy Yang

Liu Yi Fei

will do more tomorrow. its hard finding pictures that can be used.

2. I learned this concept in psychology 101. I don't know if I totally agree to it, though.

3. This is a bit difficult. Do we have to transpose the faces of the actresses using a software like what you did, or do we just post a pic of an actress with the configurations you mentioned?

Did anyone hear that about symmetry being a proportion or distance of 1.6.... btw each feature? My sister told me it's the Fibonacci number.

4. Ning Jing

Fan Bing Bing

Unknown dancer in Effendi movie whom I found beautiful:

Li Bing Bing

Ayumi Hamasaki

Shu Chang

Zhang Ziyi

Kitty Lai

That's the best that I can do. 90% of actresses' shots are either angled and they smile. It's hard to get a frontal, non-smiling one.

5. Gao Yuan Yuan

Liu Yi Fei
I know it's already done up there. But is it OK to do it with another pic. She looks like an alien with the after photo. Scary. I think her face should be more symmetrical than that.

6. Some of the pics look so unreal. Sometimes, a picture doesn't really tell us one's truly beautiful. For example, does Fan Bing Bing really look like that? I mean they must have done some special techniques when they're filming so that's why some stars look so pretty..With pretty make-up and everything behind it the stars look great on the camera. However, looking at some pics here I personally think they're all fake..It's just the camera and computer-editing..ha ha ha ha

7. no matter how touch up a picture is, the distance between each feature remains the same.

the whole concept is to actually cut those pictures up and mirror it to the other side, although the bodies tend to be off, its the fact that we can still recognise those people and see them as pretty is what symmetry is about.

i'll work on those photos posted up. not the liu ye fei one since i've done one of hers, she'll pretty much be the same and the quality of that dancer is to blurry, i can't see.

fbb, lbb, shu chang and kitty lai's pictures can't be used, their not the right angle or too far away, i'll find others to work with.
