If you've never seen rabid Nationalism from Chinese people from the Mainland, just start talking about Taiwan as a sovereign nation.

Met a person from Mainland China. We were in a group and a friend and I are from Taiwan; everyone knows this. One guy asked if I had ever been to Asia. I said no, then I remembered that I've been to Hong Kong before so I changed my answer to "yes."

Oh my goodness, the girl from Mainland China did not look happy and said, "aren't you from Taiwan?" To which I replied, "You can have been to Hawaii, but you can't say you've ever been to North America." She opened her mouth to say something else, closed her mouth and looked away.

Interesting how nationalistic Mainlanders are on this issue.

That girl's reply makes no sense, but then again - yours doesn't really related to what she asked either. Unless you're leaving things out or I misunderstood the situation.

Currently, the conversation seems like this:
Guy: Have you ever been to Asia?
You: No ... wait, actually, I've been to Hong Kong, so yes.
Girl: Aren't you from Taiwan?
You: You can have been to Hawaii, but you can't say you've ever been to North America.
