“I’m gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled,” Jackie Chan, the martial arts star, told a gathering of top Chinese officials and business leaders last weekend. “If we are not being controlled, we’ll just do what we want.”
His remarks may have gone over well at a conference where China’s president, Hu Jintao, gave the keynote speech — but they provoked a firestorm of criticism elsewhere, especially in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
