If you're serious on doing rock climbing you should train your upper body by doing mild weight-lifting at the gym. Don't worry you're not going to transform into a female hulk LOL just by lifting weight. In fact it's good for conditioning of the body.

People get bulky with muscle only after doing extreme weight-lifting and eating supplement for muscle development.

i actually already do that. here's my insane weekly workout routine. 2 days light weight training, 2 days cardio, 2 days kung fu, and now i've added a day of rock climbing. and i'm still weak. sigh.

and with all this, i'm still not fit. sigh.

WOW!, I'm so impressed. Which center did you go? Did you go to Phil Nurse gym at The Wat?

That gym include everything from Yoga to Thai Boxing to Nutrition. If you're lucky you might meet GSP (George Saint Pierre) and Rashad Evans LOL.

About swimming, you can start by taking the beginner classes. Most people can swim from about 1 to 3 months. Actually swimming is the best exercise and very relaxing. Swimming can really strengthen, condition, and tone one's body without those harsh, jarring effects of those gym exercises.

What I usually do at the Sport Center, I do half an hour cardio, half an hour weightlifting and finishing with 20 lapse of swimming which is about 50 meters x 20 = 1KM. I do this about 2 to 3 times per week if I'm not stuck browsing at SPCNET LOL.

I also do Karate classes (2 times perweek) in between those gym/swimming session.

i don't live in nyc. haha, kinda close, but not really.

and yeah, i know swimming is a really good exercise, but i have bad memories about being forced to go to the deep end during 7th grade mandatory swim class, haha. but i want to learn swimming bc after watching gem of life, i want to learn sailing.

    you're very active as well!

Rockclimbing is fun, but equipment is quite expensive, and over here indoor places cost a bit to get in for cheap students. And unlike the gym where you can muck around for 2hrs. You get really sore after a short while with rock climbing. Forearm extensors just burn out.

I find in the harder places, you really need proper gear to grip on to the rocks. Finger and dust is fricken painful.

i only go to ladies night, and the harness and all the belaying stuff comes to a grand total of $13, so it's not that bad. i usually go from around 7:30 - 10, and i find that i can stay there longer than the gym. at the gym, i always feel like i have to be moving, but at rock climbing, since i'm partnered up, we take turns climbing and belaying, so it's a chance to rest. and you're not supposed to use your arms that much!

At my area we don't have indoor rock climbing *sigh*, so I'm stuck at gym/swimming or punching each others face at the karate class. I really want to try rock climbing but need to go to KL which is about 400 KM from my location O_O.

I go indoor rock climbing from time to time. It really is a very good workout. About 1.5 hours into the climbing, my hand lose all gripping strength. Hehe. I kinda been planning to go back pretty soon. Definitely rent the special climbing shoes. I tried it with tennis shoes at 1st but it doesn't provide enough traction to climb the really hard walls.
I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code.
