Default Employee at work, mind at SPCNET.

Yes, that's me! I'm in here, in this new office, for less than 3 months, nearly 2 months and I feel like a foreign alien.

I'm the minority (race concerned) in here, while my boss and other colleagues are either West or North Indians. Hmphf! I'm only called when needed, and hardly within their circle since they speak their own lingo which I don't under a single word. They seemly show displeasure when I enjoy my meaty lunch since they are all vegetarians.

Worst, sometimes they gave me this funny look, as though I'm a spy agent sent by another company. Oh well.... I try to ignore and look forward to weekends and my pay at the end of the month!

So, what are you thoughts if you feel like a "minority" at work? (And spending like 9 hours daily at workplace living with that)

What can I say? I'm still standing! No weapon against me shall prosper! I am more than a conqueror!!!

I don't care to sit by the window on an airplane. If I can't control it, why look?

Well, by your definition, anyone who's asian who works in a mainly caucasian environment will fit the bill.

The thing is to do your job- workplace is a place to work, not to play. It's great if you can make friends etc, but if not, no biggies. There's always friends outside work.

I'm a minority. My company has maybe around 30 Japanese working (sent from the mother company) as advisor in each department. Other than those 30, we only 3 other asians including me.

On the engineering side, there are so few women working. Overall, I think we only have 4 women engineers (2 are designers - so they are more on the office side). In my own group, I'm the only woman engineer, the baby of the group and the only one not married yet. So yeah, everyday I mostly work with men, hangout with them, sit with them for lunch, etc. Our office is different than the Central Office, so it's more relaxed and people stop by often to have discussion, etc etc. I'm 'trapped' in that room with those men and have to deal with all 'manly' stuff. They talk porn, they burp, they fart *really stinky*, they talk about girls with me around them....I learned to block voices from my surrounding but everynow and then, they asked me to cover my ears Sometimes I have no idea what they're talking about and I'll ask...and most of the times those guys refused to explain it to me

I learned from those guys a lot. I learned how the guys think, how they see problems from different view, how they do things differently than us women, etc etc. We sometimes go out for dinner. Sometimes I organized a sport challenge with other departments. If I need help to fix my house, one of those guys will do it for me. I love them. I said it often, I'm the few lucky one because I love my job (sometimes I hate it though) and I love my coworkers. There are times we have to work 12-15 hrs a day...and I couldn't imagine doing it with people I don't like.

Maybe not. It's the people you work with. Some caucasians may be friendlier and try to make the environment comfortable to work in or so. As far as Asians are concerned, within my experience, I know Malays are friendly and warm. Having said that, I'm not discounting other races, of course but since I don't work with them, it's not for me to say.

Then of course, communication and friendliness work both ways. I have tried to be friendly but still I don't feel quite comfortable with them.

I'm not talking about playing or making friends here.

Work is about teamwork. Like a table, a company needs all "four legs" to support and function. In there, I am the main person at admin support. So, if I don't feel settled in, everyday would feels like a drag (though I'm trying hard not to feel that way), one side of this table becomes uneven. I think, with this, you'd understand where I'm coming from.

Mostly whatever boys do with girls....sometimes they use term/slang that I have no idea about...so I ask what that word means. And yeah, I can say that men do think about sex every 20-30 seconds like some study say. And they can turn every conversation into sex-related conversation.

I need to add, one of the biggest benefit working with men is there's no other girls for cat fight I can fight with those guys and within 5 mins they'll forget and everything is back to normal. I will still be grumpy for the rest of the day until I get some sleep, but the next day mostly I'm fine. Imagine if I have a fight with a girl, OMG, we will not talk to each other for the longest time

This is just my 2 cents, don't mind them and just be yourself. This is something they can't take away from you. If someone is interested and wants to join you, so be it. That's life, it's you against all odds. I do find ways around this problem, not easy though; I know you can get through it.

Never noticed this til now when I was searching for another thread.

Thank you very much, and appreciated. Time certainly flies and I've been in this company for almost 2 years. Have seen the previous staff left one by one. I'm the only staff from the "earlier batch". I'm considered the most senior in here, even my MD joined this company later than me.

Time really flies. It didn't seem that long ago when you first entered this job!

Right now, I have the opposite problem: I love my work so much, that no matter where I am, I'm thinking about work.

Ah, it is proof that I still have passion.

Agree time flies once you get the hang of the job and pretty soon it will be like two years or so.... In regards to being a minority at work, I just do my own thing. As long as the job gets done lol and go on spc =) When they decide to talk to me, they will speak in English. But its not too bad, once they get comfortable with you ,they open up more...
