self portraits - an Asian Asian thing?

It's just a fun thing to do. If someone occasionally decides to take a camera (oh I don't know, maybe after watching a marathon of Next Top Model and being terribly bored at home) and take some pictures of themselves and post on Facebook, it's not a big deal. It doesn't mean the person is somehow self-absorbed or egoistical.

Now if self-portraits are ALL a person ever takes and posts, then there may be some ego problem (unless the person is a model, but then I'd recommend getting a professional photographer).

It's not just an Asian thing, I see Caucasian girls doing those facebook type shots too, like they're little Asian girls. I don't get annoyed by those, it's just a phase. When they figure out how to really work a camera and can take a real "Head Shot" then those look truly amazing.

Guys also do it if they're into acting. I've had to do headshots, get stripped down to underwear, sing, and dance in front of agents and directors. It's humbling.

i don't know if you all know this.

in asia the V stands for "victory", it's a sign that people throw when they're happy.

in america (and maybe north american), the V = "peace", they throw it when they're chilling (like sport players throw when they pass the camera just so they can go on and concentrate on their game).

this is why it's so wierd to see people do it here, but not so much in Asia.

I don't find those girls wierd, some of them are pretty cute doing it. Alot of them go to college, stays in dorm/apartment, they get bore, that's something to do to pass time. Guys play games, girls take pictures (it's like a fact of life). All the girls I know does it, it's common IMO.

Thanks for the cultural explanation, warlock, but I must say, I like the Scottish V sign way better than those gay ones from Asia & America.

it's still better than the V sign made with the thumb and index fingers though, cuz that's the "loser" sign in the US.

I laugh when I see people do that sign, not realizing they are labeling themselves losers.
