Instead of Solar/Wind power, I think Ethanol is an important part a the the solution. It's clean and is renewable. Here in North America, we have millions of square miles of empty land can be convert into farmland to produce ethanol. Currently, here in Ontario, our gas contains only about 10% of ethanol. If we can mass produce ethanol oil, we can increase it to much higher than the current level.
Probably the best strategy is not overly rely on any one particular source of energy, but diversify and spread usage to different types of energy source. In that way, less harm will be done by any one of the sources being depleted (and they'll deplete much more slowly) and whatever damage one might do will be offset by the lesser frequency of use.
