In wuxia, which martial arts skills are so similar superficially that one skill is often mistaken for the other by all but the most observant and experienced wulin observers?

In DGSD, almost everyone who encountered Beiming Shengong did not recognize it, instead mistaking it for Energy-Dissipating Technique (Huagong Dafa).

xiao yao school's xiao wu xiang gong and shaolin temple's 72 advanced techniques.
I don't think they were inherently similar, just that Jiu Mozhi was using Xiaowu to mimic the effect of Shaolin's 72 Advanced Techniques. Xiaowu could probably do far more than what the 72 advanced techniques could, although the 72 techniques were much safer to practice without harming oneself.
Actually, the 72 techniques are a lot more unsafe compared to XWXG.
In 2nd edition, JMZ fire deviated because he forced himself to learn YJJ. In 3rd edition, he fire deviated because he only learnt 7 out of 8 volumes of XWXG (and with only 7/8, he could replicate the 72 arts!).
The complete XWXG did not cause anybody harm. WZY and LQS both studied it and both had no problems.
The 72 arts caused XYS and MRB problems. And there was one more Xuan monk who was crippled because he learnt too many of the 72 arts (mentioned by the Abbot when he asked Sweeper for help).
Its BIxie Jianfa Gawdammit you guys!!!!
I'm sure WYZ and LQS could study alot of martial arts without having problems, so for those two guys to not have problems with a martial art is no guarantee of safety
Reverend Rongku prepared himself.
Suddenly, he toss his hands and screamed: "I am not human! I am an animal!"
The crowd startled at such a bizarre beginning to the story.
I seem to remember some bit about how Jiu Mozhi was grateful to Murong Bo for teaching him how to use Xiaowu to simulate the 72 arts, and then later some thing about how he realised that Murong Bo was only using him because by using Xiaowu to simulate the 72 arts he harmed himself quite badly. Or maybe that was just a liberty taken in a series. Xiaowu didn't hurt in itself, using it to simulate the 72 arts did, I think.
If using Xiaowu to simulate the 72 arts was safer than learning the actual 72 arts, Murong Bo wouldn't have gone to Shaolin to learn the arts, and could have just use Xiaowu himself and simulated the same thing (or did MRB not have access to Xiaowu?). The 72 arts were bad if you learned too many and they clashed, but I think specialising in one was considered quite a healthy and orthodox thing to do.
I think that was only on TV.
MRB did not have access to the XWXG.
You can harm yourself even with learning just one. According to Sweeper's words, XYS only took one of the manuals compared to MRB's swiping of multiple copies.

Back to o/p.
In XAJH, XWT's art of directing energy into the ground was mistaken for XXDF.
In Legendary Siblings, Xiao Yu'er's "moving flowers, grafting wood" was mistaken for the more advanced "moving flowers grafting Jade" skill of the Floral Palace.
The God of Sword, The Sword of God, SWORD GOD Zhuo Bufan's single-stance execution was mistaken for Tianshan Tonglao's famed capability of the same stature.

Where did Jiumozhi get the little formless skill from? Did Li Qiushui leave some manuals behind or something?
he stole them at wang island. TSTL gave them to DQC as a farewell gift but he wasn't able to master the skill. he was afraid his disples would steal the manuals so he left 7 out of 8 volumes with mdm wang while he ept the first volume to practice. JMZ was spying on them and saw mdm wang receiving the manuals. he wouldn't leave the area without geting a chance at the murongs library or failing that the wangs library.
i just remembered this. when GJ and OYK were fighting, GJ came up with three moves to cover the last three HL18Z stances he had not learned yet. OYK taught the moves were genuine HL18Z, just GJ probably hadn't mastered them, even through the moves were totally useless.
