    Story Overview

Wisely - A name that depicts a life full of legend. He has experienced many strange incidents where science can offer no explanation, he believes in ghosts and spirits and believes in the existence of extra terrestrial beings because he feels that if the only life in the universe are Earthlings, then wouldn't it be very lonely? On the route to finding the truth, heaven arranges a companion for Wisely, she has the opposite character to him, always looking for the scientific explanation, the truth and the evidence, she is the logical Pak Su.

Wisely finished his education abroad and returned to the motherland, he doesn't care for his family's pawning business and opens his own private detective agency, the first in the history of 1930's Shanghai, his aim behind this is for ease of his own curiosity into the weird and wonderful happenings in the world. Wisely meets Su for the first time in "Paper Monkey". When he first meets her, she is working as a doctor in the hospital and Wisely is smitten by her as she leaves a deep impression on him. The second time he sees her, he is investigating the reason why his assistant Siu Kwok has been heavily injured whilst investigating a case and goes into a nightclub where she has changed into a club singer, with a lingering song sends Wisely into a frenzy, but he is disappointed when he finds that she may be the mistress of the powerful leader of the Ching Gang in Shanghai - Senior Pak. The third encounter with Su, she has changed once more into a skilled assassin, but although she shoots at him, the bullet misses. Later, Wisely finds out that she has intentionally freed him, so he decides that she must also have feelings towards him. Also he realises that she is not Pak's mistress, but his daughter so he sets his heart on her pursuit, feeling that she is a perfect match for his genius.

Unfortunately, fate plays games and Kwok's injuries are found to have been caused by an internal betrayal in Pak's Ching Gang about the whereabouts of a treasure trove. After the investigation by Wisely, they find that the person responsible for the trouble is no other than Su's elder brother Pak Kei Wai. Eventually, to stop Wai from getting the treasure, Wisely accidentally causes him to fall down a deep cliff and his body cannot be found. This news causes much shock in the gang and although Pak knows deep down that Wisely cannot be held responsible for the death of his son, but the sorrow he feels for Wai's death cannot be hidden and this hinders the development of Wisely and Su's feelings as an formless raging river springs up between them and Su decides to leave Shanghai.

Three years later, Wisely continues his adventurous spirit to find the truth behind various strange occurences, but every day he brings out the bullet necklace to think about Su. In the case of "Changing Corpse", Wisely assists tycoon Cheng Po Wan to investigate his father's corpse that will not decompose and once again meets with Su, who has become a forensic doctor. When the corpse is then suddenly changed into nothing but bones, he blames Su for obstructing his work and the two start their arguments before solving their prior problems. In the case of "Wood Coal" Wisely feels Pak's distant attitude towards him and finds not only a river, but also an invisible wall springing up between him and Su.

Wisely and Su work together with their common friend in "Dream Seekers" as he tries to settle the differences between him and another friend, but he cannot evade the debts that need to be repaid from their past lives. Afterwards, Wisely and Su can only believe that it is down to destiny as to whether they can continue their unfinished love. In another twist of fate, in "Poison Puzzle" they find that Wai has not died but has lost his memory after falling down the cliff and has been cared for in the last three years by a lady from the Miao tribe called Ba Ju. Pak is overjoyed to see his son and opens up to Wisely and everyone thinks that they will definitely get back together again, but the opposite is true as they each refuse to put aside their silly pride and continue their arguments. The heavens place more tests on them as they meet again in the cases of "Immortal" and "Mixing with Ghosts", creating some laughs from the helpless people beside them.

In the final case "Tomb Robber" Wisely realises that he really does deeply love Su. One day someone asks Wisely to go and rob a tomb. To start with, he refuses, but later he finds out tht Wai has accepted this mission and disappeared and Su finds herself in danger after going to look for her brother. Upon further investigation, they find that this is all strongly linked with the Chinese Spies, a foreign space agency and alien beings. In the end, Wisely helps the aliens escape from the ancient tomb, but Su is in grave danger and at the life and death situation, Wisely can no longer hold back his feelings for her and tells of his regrets of not telling her of his love at the beginning. At this time, the emotions of humans touch the aliens, who repay Wisely by using their superior intelligence to send Wisely back in time and let him show his love to Su all over again...

Default Episode 5 - The House of a Shanghai Tycoon is haunted

The three years are nearly up, but there is no news of Su and Wisely misses her dearly. There is a break-in at the former home of the late Shanghai Tycoon Cheng Tin Luk, but the criminal claims that he saw Luk in the house and the stories arouse the curiosity of Wisely. At this time, Luk's widow comes to the agency and instructs him to solve the mystery of whether her husband is dead or alive. Mrs Cheng says that she saw Luk come back to life, but her son Cheng Po Wan says that she is just imagining things because she misses him too much. However, the strange thing is that Wan then refused to allow people to pay their last respects to Luk at the funeral and making her suspect that he is still alive.

Wisely and Kwok go their own ways to investigate, with Kwok going to the news agency to seek the reporter but he finds that the reporter has already been sacked and the thief has moved to Hong Kong with his girlfriend. It would seem that someone is trying to hide the details about this. Wisely goes to research about Luk's life and finds that he led a very secretive life. In the library, he meets a strange youth who plays tricks on him and annoys him a lot. When he gets home, everyone exchanges their findings and they all believe that there is something odd happening. Hung offers her opinions too and Wisely says that she should find something to do to ease her free time, she wagers with him that she will find a job before they solve their case.

Wisely goes to find Dan to ask the details about Luk's case and Dan says he will only tell if Wisely gets three goals past him. Dan loses on purpose and reveals all the details to Wisely. It appears that when Dan took his team to search the premises on that evening, they found no evidence of there being a man chained to the wall in the room that the thief had pointed out, so Dan's superior Keung Wai Tai had decided to close the case, but Dan wants Wisely to find out the truth because he is sure that there is something being hidden.

Wisely visits the Cheng family home late at night and scrapes at the paint and ash on the wall. As he leaves, he bumps into the youth again and is met with more of his jeers, frustrating Wisely once again. Gobi and Desert study the samples that Wisely has brought and find that this is new paint, suggesting that someone is trying to hide the whereabouts of Luk. Wisely, Kwok and Ching decide to go and exhume the grave of Luk but when they see that the grave has already been dug up and unearth the coffin, they find that the strange youth is hiding in there.

Default Episode 6 – Wisely meets Su again

That odd youth refers to himself as Wisely, much to the bewilderment of Wisely, upon further interrogation, they find that this person is Wan Po Yu – the journalist who was sacked. Unhappy at his sacking, he had decided to find the truth himself. They decide to work together and Hung returns, announcing that she has found a job. Yu and Kwok pretend to be reporters after a story as they investigate the Doctor Fai Ga. The doctor hides his words and the two become suspicious, Wisely later finds out that he owes a lot of gambling debts and could quite easily have been bought out by money.

Yu breaks into Wan’s offices to investigate and bumps into Hung who is working there, she calls out in fright and they end up in the police station. Mrs Wan wreaks havoc in Wisely’s house, blaming him for leading her son down the wrong path, Wisely is at a loss with her lack of reasoning, but luckily Hung uses a small plan to make Mrs Wan leave. Hung tells Wisely that Yu will be holding a charity ball in the Great Shanghai Club and tells him to take the chance to investigate. At the ball, Wan’s partner is Su and seeing this, Wisely’s jealousy is stirred and he goes out to make trouble. Su recognises him through his disguise and he says some horrible things, causing them to separate unhappily. Su is angry at Wisely’s short temper and Wisely is unhappy that she has a new partner, but secretly they both still miss each other.

The next day, Wisely goes to the university to listen in on Su’s lecture. He uses the meaning of death in a way to imply she has changed her heart, she turns this round to point at his small-mindedness. Wisely is concerned that Wan is not a good person, and tells Su she should not be with him, but she doesn’t believe him, making Wisely swear he will prove it to her. Yu and the others make ghost noises at Wan’s offices whilst Hung pretends to have seen the ghost of Luk, causing some chaos and making Wan leave his date with Su and go back to the house. At this time, Wisely takes Su back to the Cheng’s house and see Wan together with Luk. The two scold him for being immoral and against the protests of Wan, they free Luk from his chains when suddenly he comes alive and attacks Wisely and Su.

Default Episode 7 – Luk is not an Earth Man

Luk wakes and goes crazy, attacking Su and Wisely. Wisely struggles and stabs Luk and a green coloured blood flows from him, giving everyone a fright before he drops lifelessly to the ground. Wan explains that when Luk died, he asked Fai Ga about the reason for his death, but he wouldn’t give details. Su is curious as to why Luk’s body has not decomposed and asks Wan’s permission to take it back to the lab for an autopsy, but when they get it back to the hospital, there is nothing left of the corpse but white bones that are very different from human bones, Wisely suspects that Wan’s father was not human.

Wisely asks Mrs Cheng about Luk’s life, she says he is from SE Asia and has no family. He once had severe fever and sickness, but recovered thanks to Fai Ga, but apart from this nothing else happened. Mrs Cheng passes a key left by Luk to Wan, who finds a box hidden in the garden that contains Luk’s diary that proves that both he and Wan are not totally Earth Men. In order to keep this a secret, Wan asks Mrs Cheng to terminate her arrangement with Wisely and then goes to find Fai Ga to retrieve the medical records of Luk. However the doctor blackmails him for a lot of money and Wan accidentally kills him . With Fai Ga’s death, Wisely is even more suspicious and when Su investigates the body and finds that the doctor was murdered, Wisely points the blame on Wan, Su half believes him and tells him to go and find evidence.

Wan asks Su out for a date and announces his love for her, but she refuses saying that they can only be friends. Wan believes this is because Su is discriminating against him being half alien and is very angry. Afterwards, Wan finds that Hung has been spying on him on behalf of Wisely and he is furious, deciding on vengeance. Wan goes to the hospital to look for Su and once again professes his love for her. She tries to explain to him, but he will not let go and suddenly loses his senses as he attacks Su.

Default Episode 9 – The Secret in the Coal

Su says that with the death of Wai, Pak has been very unhappy and because of this, she has chosen to split up with Wisely. Hung, Yu and the others take the coal to Gobi and Desert to study it, but all the tests show that it is just a piece of coal and they are all baffles, afterwards they X-Ray the coal an Hung sees a figure of a person inside, but this is brushed off by Wisely as an illusion.

Gai Sei and Bin Ng find that they have lost the coal and hold Ching as hostage, demanding its return. Wisely finds out and immediately takes the coal back to them, but Sei insists that this one is also a fake to Wisely’s bemusement. Pak goes to find Wisely and urges him to return the coal, in a stroke of inspiration, he knows Gobi and Desert still have the coal. The two reveal that they have found the coal to be able to emit sound and maybe it has life. There is something strange in the coal, so Wisely asks Sei about the story behind it. Sei explains that many years ago in the coal firing kilns of the Coal Sect, a man named Lam Tze Yuen appeared just as they were sealing the Autumn Kiln and demanded that they opened it. In order not to miss the lucky hour, Sei refused and Yuen jumped into the kiln, although Sei instructed Ng to go and rescue him, they failed and Ng was severely burned.

Yuen’s death has made Sei very guilty and he went to visit the family to investigate Yuen’s strange motives. Mrs Lam allows him to look in the study and he finds a diary of ancestor Lam Yuk Sing who was a general in the Tai Ping Rebellion and was responsible for hiding treasure. Later he was killed, but his soul lived on inside a tree and was then able to be reincarnated. Sei believed that Yuen had gone in search of this tree and immortality and possibly his soul had been sealed up in the kiln, so he offers Mrs Lam a piece of gold that she can use to exchange for whatever is left of Yuen after they reopen the kiln. Sei returns to his sect and finds a piece of coal left in the bottom of the kiln that he wants to give back to the family, but they have been driven away by natural disaster and cannot be found. After many years of fruitless searching and advertising, they meet with the curiosity of Yu and the others. Just as they finish telling the story, Yuen’s son Pak Chun arrives and accuses Sei of the murder of his father.

Default Episode 10 – Yuen’s soul posses Pak Chun

Chun insists that Sei caused the death of Yuen and despite Wisely and the others’ attempts to explain the past, he says that it is ridiculous and says that unless he sees his father’s soul with his own eyes, otherwise he will not believe what Sei says. Wisely asks Chun to give him time to find the evidence and Chun agrees on three days.

Gobi and Desert carefully study the coal again and find that it is emitting a very low frequency sound and think that it is trying to say something. Everyone guesses and compare different words to the sound waves before working out that the coal is saying “Let me out”. Everyone becomes very excited and try every idea to communicate with the coal. They try fortune tellers and mediums but cannot find an answer and are disappointed. As the deadline draws near, they all become desperate when Hung falls asleep on the coal and sees Yuen in her dream. He explains that his soul is trapped in the coal and that his death is nothing to do with Sei. She asks him to come out and explain everything to Chun, but just as he is about to tell her how, she is woken up by Foon Jer.

Everyone tries to force Hung into falling asleep again but she can’t, even though everyone else is worn out trying. As time runs out, Wisely has an idea as he asks Su to come and hypnotise her, but this still doesn’t work. Hung remembers suddenly that she thinks she heard him say to burn the coal. As they watch the coal almost burn to nothing, there is still no sign of Yuen’s soul. Chun stands up to leave, saying he will be sending Sei to prison, Yuen’s soul suddenly appears and takes over Chun’s body. He thanks everyone for setting him free before floating away. Chun says that he experienced everything whilst he was possessed and he has no choice but to believe what Wisely has said, Sei is proven innocent and the incident is ended. Yu finds that Hung has some extra sensory powers and urges Gobi and Desert to study her, but to no avail, instead their electricity makes her hair curly and her very angry. Wisely sees Su again and asks if they can rebuild their relationship, Su is undecided but then Pak appears and the two depart.
