Maybe he didn't get enough sleep the night before. Or he was distracted by a woman he couldn't get out of his mind on his test day. Or the place had an odor that prevented him from doing his best.

The reason that Feynman scored lower than expected was that he "struggled" with the linguistic part of the test, while his mathematical and logic reasonings was off the scale.

Let me repeat my previous comment : If you know what he did in physics, that should put him in the top 10-20 people in the world.

its likely feynman took a weshsler-like iq test which nomally includes verbal-based subtests up to 50%. ive never known a math/physics talent who doesnt do well on a purely logic-based iq test.
one question ive always wondered about, just too lazy to do a search, so i ask it here: why is the rate of individuals with high iq/genius-level intelligence in jewish people so high?
it's true that it's unfair to have language portions on an iq test. that's why mensa (at least american mensa) has 2 tests. you just have to pass one.
the first is timed, and it's just try to get as many questions right as you can. there is math and language comprehension. not much of the remember equations kind, but more patterns and probability.
the second test is madd long, and there is a portion where you count money (US coins), a memory test, and a lot of patterns, such as out of these 4 pictures, which one doesn't fit?
