I heard this drama is very similar to Boys Over Flowers. So which one is better? I began to watch a few episodes of it because my friend insisted, but I still believe BOF beats it by far. Many fans changed sides haha.

Ratings does not determines all of a drama's greatness. While they dont have high ratings but they held up pretty strong and steady against IRIS since their ratings didn't budge a bit even a stiff competition. THough it didn't go up as we wanted. IT's the best drama of the year!!!!!!!!
Everybody has different taste. But to me this drama is so good. It may be underrated in korea but it's such a big hit on the internet.
Compare to the other HOng sisters dramas, i personally think this one is really well written. Just seeing the dialogue of ep 7 of the "moon and stars", one just squeals over how they came up with such profound lines. It's one of those dramas you cant take it so seriously because looking at the female lead you already know she's a girl. Her voice is not even a bit manly. But the point is you're supposed to just imagine and have fun with it. Everyone is perfectly casted. Though it's the most underrated drama.

Actually, most ratings are pretty accurate. I've watched plenty of dramas and I've always checked for feedbacks and ratings on dramawiki.
Don't get me wrong, I'm just watching the drama for the fun of it and the guys are actually good looking after trying to get used to their heavy style. It took me a while, but I managed to do so.
Anyways, what I'm trying to state is that this is almost an identical replica of Boys Before Flowers. The fact that Shin Woo sang a song and playing the guitar with exactly the same title "Because I'm Stupid" is not original. Not, that it bothers me, but personally, I can't help but to compare it to Boys Before Flowers. Even their characters (Ji Hoo and Shin Woo) are very similar! In my opinion, Ji Hoo is better looking, but Shin Woo is a better actor.
Moving on to Park Shin Hye and Goo Hye Sun. Both of these actresses are very pretty. I thought Jandi was quite annoying in Boys Before Flowers with all her yelling, but Mi Nam is sooo naive that she can surpass as being stupid. So both of them are equal. However, I give extra points to PSH for portraying the character better.
Now, talking about Tae Kyung and Goo Joon Pyo. Both of these guys are like hot stuffs right now haha. They're both very atrractive. Jang Geun Suk for being supremely cute. While, Lee Min Ho for being utterly cool. I mean I definetely prefer LMH's hairstyle rather than JGS's heavy make-up and funny hairdos. LMH's acting was more unique and persay he gives more expression. Whereas, JGS kind of seems like at times he's not delivering the right expressions at the right moment.
Even the soundtracks are very good. The fact that they use the actor's bands/voice to promote their dramas haha it surely worked! However, BOF's OST is far better! Don't get me wrong, I enjoy listening to You're Beautiful's OST too. They have good songs (especially Lee Hong Ki's voice ahhh!).
Now this is where both dramas are so different in terms of quality. Even though there were many BOF versions, the Korean one was the best for me. It pulled it off greatly even with minor plot holes here and there. It didn't make me go beserk or anything. In comparison, You're Beautiful seriously has no plot and no surprises. We can guess every part of it. What annoys me the most is that the characters aren't direct. If you want to say something just say it. If someone is pulling you down, you got to talk back. Unlike, Go Mi Nam .... who believes anything! I really understand the part that she's supposed to be innocent, but there's a fine line between innocent and plain stupid. Sometimes, I really wonder if her character is just plain stupid.
The plot from YB also goes around in circles and I know BOF does too, but at least there's twists and turns. Also, all the chacters from YB are much more unrealistic than the unrealism of BOF. (SPOILER)click to show spoilers
I just don't feel the scenes patch together as well as BOF.
Oh yes, not to mention the necklace similarity and comparison to star and moon as well!
Please, where's the originality?

That's just one of their imaginations or parodies. They just released the pictures to get more attention. They would never reveal the ending for us like that.
Sunlight:
Like i said everybody has different taste.
Even with low ratings, it's still very popular online. Just about 300 to 400 people visiting "you're beautiful" thread everyday at soompi forum, you can see how popular it's among the international fans. SO i am glad there are many others that shares the same sentiments as me.
I followed the drama more closely so i have different opinions. Tae Kyung personality is more of an arrogant fool. He has been abandoned by his mom since little so he's a bit cold. Apart from his weird dressing, i think he execute his character fine.
As far as BOF, i hardly watched that series. At the time i was into more hard core comedies. THough i must say the production was more grand, hot actors, what else can be said, people anticipated that drama for over a year. Though i found the Jan di to be too weak compare to the original version. I found myself looking for other comedies so skipped it.
If there are simlarities, hmmm.. i wouldnt know.lol..
The reason why TK is mad at ep 14 is (this is dramabeans exp. , i dont feel like writing so much, so i'll just let you read hers)click to show spoilers

Yeah, it's an enjoyable drama if you ignore the major plot holes. I never said, I don't like it. Just want to state my opinion when people ask which drama is better.
This is just like a typical fan girl drama and I know most people are watching for the guys.
The reasoning is still very childish I find, but then again that's just my opinion. Like the person who wrote that is correct. The conflict can just be resolved in like 5 minutes.click to show spoilers
The thing I hate the most is that these characters are not straightforward! And if you're not straightforward the storyline goes in circle!click to show spoilers
Overall, I'm enjoying this drama just for the characters' main traits rather than the overall defaults... because there are a lot of flaws.
By the way, most of these fans or popularity are coming from teenagers and fangirls. I, myself am a teenager and I still find it's missing something to fully excel.
So if you guys want to watch something that's really funny, try "Smile, You".

I like both BOF and You Are Beautiful. BOF has a special place in my heart as I thought it was a good adaption of HYD (manga), which I love. But You're beautiful makes me do my fangirl squeels and grabs me as I love the comedy in it. Mi Nyeu and Hwang Tae Gyeung are sooo cute together. And I like all three male leads.
I don't think it's an exact replica of HYD as the storyline is completely different. It follow pretty boy male story, but it honestly reminds me more of Hana Kimi with the cross dressing hijinks. I think it is a pretty boy show, but it is also well done with a lot of genuinely funny moments. Saying that this is the only reason why people are watching it is a little insulting. I do enjoy my pretty boys, but if this show had not picked up after the 1st two episodes I would not have continued it. There are plenty of pretty actors in a lot of shows. I also did not find Hwang Tae Kyeung very attractive in the beginning with his guyliner and weird hairstyles, now I find him totally hot/ esp with the eyeliner. And I think it was due to the character and acting.
Wow, so many criticisms here!!
@SuetSung
The reason why PSH was so feminine as a guy is because her character was written that way. It makes no logical sense that a feminine and naive nun-to-be would pass off as a guy especially when she's living with the bandmates. That is why the 2 lead guys found out that she's a girl by episode 2 itself. And evil girl He Yi found out within 1 episode after her appearance. By then, all the lead characters know her true identity except for Jeremy. Anyway, the real Go Mi Nam will be coming back in the last 2 episodes, so we will at least see PSH acting as a TRUE guy. Only then will we see whether she can pull it off as a guy or not!
@JohnDoe
I don't know how much you still detest this drama, but the fact that you're still watching it means something. By the way, I think you should pay more attention while watching the drama. Your spoilers are a little incorrect.

@Sunlight
If the characters are straightforward, we would be done with the drama in 1 episode. Find me a drama that has completely straightforward characters. And anyway, I give credits to this drama to have at least 1 main character who is straightforward - Jeremy.
As far as storyline comparisons to BOF, it is quite unfair to compare. BOF is based on a 37 volume manga. It is something that has been established with a firm base story. Furthermore, YAB is a comedy romance which focus more on making its viewers laugh.
The similarity of Shin Woo's characteristics to Ji Hoo is practically the only thing which I can see if you want to say YAB is a replica of BOF. Even that also I believe is because of Jung Yong Hwa's acting (the guy's a newbie). If portrayed by a more seasoned actor, I believe that Shin Woo's character can be more developed rather than just being Ji Hoo No. 2. Every other character is different. You can't compare Tae Kyung with Jun Pyo or Mi Nam with Jan Di. The have completely different personalities and background. Nothing similar at all.
And about your annoyance about the necklace? We might as well go all the way back to Winter Sonata and its famous star necklace then!click to show spoilers
As for the star and moon story - honestly, I felt that it was played out better in YAB and has more significance compared to BOF. But that is just my opinion. By the way, if you want be picky on every small similarities, then we have to compare YAB with a freaking load of dramas. The Kiss resembles Taiwan's Devil Beside You. Jeremy resembles HanaKimi's Nakatsu....I can just go on and on this way.
And can you give me examples of Go Mi Nam being stupid? Yes, she is innocent and naive, and yes, she is a very compliant kind of person who agrees with other people. But again, this is a nun-to-be who was brought up in the convent and protected by her brother when they were kids. But she has developed as the episodes progressed. She answers back to Tae Kyung now. She knows how to bribe and to get her own way around him. She finally stood up to He Yi in the greenhouse. The only "stupidness" that I could see is that she is dense regarding Shin Woo's feelings. But at the same time, it is his fault for not being forward with her.
As for how long the conflict at the end episode 14 will go, I would just like to remind you that we have only 2 more episodes to go before the drama ends. Most likely the conflict will not last long - which by the way, will be shorter than the many conflicts of BOF.
And as for the reasoning of the conflict, childish as it may seems to you, it is in line with the characteristic of Tae Kyung (go back to episode 2 - where he wouldn't listen to Mi Nam's explanation, but when to himself, notes that she should have left him to cool off first), especially when it concerns his weakest point - his mother. The guy wouldn't have listen even if Mi Nam explained at that time. And you seem to have gotten the wrong conception. He was mad at herclick to show spoilers
Does YAB have no plot? I see the plot clearly. Girl become guy to help brother. Bandmates and others find out that she is a girl. Girl has mysterious parentage, which climax with finding out her connection with her boyfriend's estranged mother. And the ending? We'll have to wait til next thursday.
What about the plot of BOF? Girl hates boy. Girl falls in love with boy. Plenty of angsty conflicts in between. Mother tries to break them up. Girl ends up with boy.
Although I might seem to be bashing BOF here, but I am actually very very much a fan of it, and have therefore hope that you don't take my opinion as biasing towards YAB. I love BOF for a whole other reason and enjoy both dramas very much.
YAB is not without its weaknesses. The character He Yi was dragged on too long and the motivation of Mo Hwa Ran seems a little too crazy (i mean that literally...she really seems to be in her own world and thinks that everyone revolves around it). Hopefully that will change in the last 2 episodes and her reasoning for "evilness" might be explained properly. Another weakness that I noticed is actually the fact that they did not fully utilise their own strength - Lee Hong Ki is a certified singer (a good one to the boot!) but his abilities was not shown in the dramaThe Hong sisters really should have written something in to show off his singing. Another weakness will be Jung Yong Hwa's acting. I do not mean to say he is bad, but the problem is that all the other actors (lead and supporting) was too good, that he seems bad. It is also strange that the twins who were so close when they were kids seems to have no contact with each other as adults. But maybe this is because of the fact that one is going to be a nun so she was cloistered in the convent and have almost no contact with the outside world.click to show spoilers
@JohnDoe again.
Really would love to debate about all the things you pointed out in your first review post, but my post is getting too long. Furthermore, would like to know your CURRENT opinion after watching so many episodes.

Solitary trees, if they grow at all, grow strong.
Right, I am simply trying to say what's on my mind.
Some straightforward dramas that I recall are "Smile, You" (not finished airing yet) and "Brilliant Legacy". I agree that there aren't a lot and what I mean by straightforward is they don't prolong their personal conflicts.They don't need to extend these conflicts for more than an episode. Dramas that are able to surpass these prolonged scenes are better executed.click to show spoilers
Obviously, I know that not a lot of dramas are straightforward because I've watched so many that it's getting repetitive. Yes, I still enjoy them nonetheless.
Yes, I COMPLETELY agree with you. I was just about to say that Jeremy's character is very well rounded. I really enjoy watching his character. I would love it if there was a main character like that- haha.
I know that other dramas tend to give similar gifts, but BOF was just released about half a year ago. Pretty darn weird if a lot of plots are similar. It just diminishes their originality.
I mean we debate about this all day, but I know it's just our opinions. So no harsh feelings or anything.

BOF was released half a year ago. But its story has been around way longer than that - which means that the star necklace has been there for years. =P

But completely agree with you regarding Shin Woo's character. It is one of the biggest thorn on my side when watching this drama.
No harsh feelings at all. Honestly, that post up there was the first time I wrote so much. I don't know why, but this drama is the only one that brought out a crazy part in me after all 8 years of watching korean dramas.

He has a somewhat shaved head like a rocker. I've just seen episode one, but I think I like it. It reminds me a lot of Nodame Cantabile. He even won an award as best newcomer actor or something from this drama. Check it out, if you haven't already seen it.
He still has that angry look, but less of that proud, arrogrant type personality that Hwang Tae Kyung has. The way he speaks as Kang Gun Woo is different. I'll let you know if I like this character better or less.

I dont even know why we are comparing this and BOF. If you want to compare about the popularity as ratings, you should pick the other highest ratings shows like "brilliant legacy" to compare to BOF. It has kinda similar type of rich guy likes poor girl.
But as far as BOF, the production was grand. The cast was all hot actors. Plus famous actors like han chae young, kim hyun joo. Hot singers like the guy who played the 2nd lead. I mean just the cast alone already draws massive attention. The production was grand. They prepared like for like year. The story was something that's already been used before. Of course it was more more refine, they were able to perfect it more.
While YB was low budget. To the point where they almost was not going to even start the drama if it wasn't for the directors and staff insisting on it. The time frame they have to prepare it was short. There was hardly any promotions with it. The cast is mostly new, with the exception of the two main leads.
But i think it's largely due to the fact that the people are not used to this type of drama. Plus the clothing and storyline was not that convincing at the beginning. But once you get into, it's pure entertainment at its best.
Like many dramas, it has many flaws. Which we can consist a list of. But i enjoyed it for what it is. It made me laugh, cry, sad at moments.
Like you guys said, the Shin woo character is not really great. But it's his first time acting so we'll give him some credit. Same goes for the 2nd in BOF. His acting was bleh..but we'll forgive them because they have beauful faces.
As for main girl character at times i feel like they made her too dumb. But to think about it, i think the writers want to empasize the fact that; their flaws makes them compatible. MN Is really niave, while TK is really calculative. He thinks one way and acts another because of his arrogant cold nature. It's that that draws them together. They see each other like shelters. He learns and sees himself through her.
Same for BOF's Jandi. Other versions they made her a very strong minded, full of spirit type of girl. In the korean version, she's like vulnerable. It's always up to guys to save to day or make it up for her.
But anyways, I finished YB and it wasn't as great as i expected. I hoping for a more romantic setup near the end but didn't get it. Still it was an ok drama. Kept me smiling when i see it.
Of course BOF is better. The money they spent on the sceneries already made the drama prettier to watch. There were more romantic moments.
But never the less, even a low budget drama like YB still makes some sweet memories for me.

After finishing this drama I kind of feel disappointed with it. It started out well but the last half just flopped. I found the ending a little cheesy. I guess I can't expect much from k-dramas, most of them end up like this. Overall, it was a decent drama, the funny moments kept me watching.
By the way, what I don't get is how Tae Kyung can drive at night when he has night blindness. Did I miss something?
