It was in sequential order really. He gave up when all three of them arrived at the same time.

Not exactly. I have not read the novel, but I did see the 2006 TV adaptation. At one point during the fight, it seemed like JLFW took on YD and ZBT both at the same time and seemed to hold his own against both of them. When HYS joined in, it was then that he gave up realizing that there in no way in hell he could ever take on 3 greats all at the same time.

Chapter 38, Life And Death Are Boundless:
Zhou Botong enjoyed his one-on-one duel with the Fawang, but when
Reverend Yideng joined the battle he felt it was uninteresting. So he
stood aside and observed the battle.

In the beginning there was only one meter or so in between Reverend
Yideng and Fawang; but soon, after dodging palm blasts and evading
finger fire, the gap between them gradually became wider. They were now
standing about four meters apart from each other and used their internal
strengths to battle each other from afar.

    ....

    The
whisked palm of Fawang was incredible and the eagle could not withstand
it. The male eagle made somersault in mid-air and fell into the deep gorge.

Huang Rong, Cheng Ying, Lu Wushuang and Yinggu called out with shock.

Zhou Botong became angry and yelled, “Damn monk! The Old Urchin will
disregard Wulin traditions today and fight you too.” He raised his fist
and attacked Fawang from the back.

    ....

Fawang was attacked from both sides and was afraid now. Although he had
high martial arts skills, how could he withstand the combined attacks of
two great martial arts masters? He lost his appetite for the fight and
took out his golden and silver wheels to block the ‘Solitary Yang
Finger’ and ‘Vacant Fists’. He leaned to the left and leapt up towards
the left and he gained access to the plains area of the valley. Zhou
    Botong yelled and gave chase.

    ....

While he was stunned for a minute, an old man in a long green robe
walked out of the forest. He looked very suave and distinguished. Zhou
Botong was happy to see him and shouted, “Old Heretic Huang! This damn
monk is responsible for the death of your granddaughter. Let us capture
    him together.”

    ....

Reverend Yideng also came fast. Together with the Eastern Heretic, they
formed a triangle surrounding Fawang. Fawang looked at Yideng; then at
Botong; and finally at the Eastern Heretic. He sighed and threw his five
    wheels to the ground.

“If it were a one-on-one combat, I wouldn’t budge a single inch to any
one of you,” he said wryly.

    ARTS time

JY Characters who could single-handedly took on more than one Greats at a time.
Only a handful of genii can take on multiple Greats, using both hands. Using just one hand to handle multiple Greats, that number is reduced to maybe 2 people at most.

I'm not sure even Sweeper Monk can take on two greats at a time with just one hand. All of his maneuvers made good use of his hands.

Maybe Sweeper Monk can't, but maybe Dugu Qiubai can.

What about OuYangFeng? I don't think anyone has mentioned him yet.
At the end of LOCH, he was as powerful as Huang YaoShi and Hong7Gong combined. Although he did not take on both of them at the same time, Huang YaoShi was required to use his knowledge to combine with 7Gong's fighting skills.

Only in LOCH '82. In the novel, he was still more-or-less equal to each of them, but they had a hard time with him because his "insane" martial arts were so unpredictable (Hung 7 Gung had started to figure it out during his fight with Au Yeung Fung, however). If Hung 7 Gung and Wong Yerk See had ganged up on Au Yeung Fung, they would have wasted him, but they were too honorable/proud to do that.

This is true, though I don't think Ouyang Feng gets the credit he deserves. In my mind he is officially the best fighter in LOCH, and it is not a 4 way tie as we always like to think of it.

Hiding martial arts and saving it for the tournament is a perfectly legitimate strategy, as Hong Qigong himself wanted to do that with his Dog Beating Stick, and Ouyang Feng would have won in a duel/fight against either HYS or HQG. I agree they would have eventually figured him out, but the only reason they lasted as long as they did was because they were teaming up in a sense. Unpredictability plays a large part in these tournament settings, and being on the same general level with the advantage of unpredictability leads to titles just as in many sports.

And during the fight, they were shouting tips to each other, and fought him one after another with no real rest. It was not a fair competition and they still realistically only managed a draw.

In LOCH 94 it was even more dramatic. OYF was beating the other THREE greats who were ganging up on him.

    I kindda liked that one

It kind of bums me out that the legendary 9 Yin that was hyped up throughout the novel doesn't really push one much past the Great level...and it takes decade(s) too. As cheesy as TVB wuxia series are, I do get hyped up when someone finally gets the legendary manual and is ready to go super saiyan mode .

Does Jinlun Fawang count since he took on Zhu Batong and Yi Deng and Guo Jing and Yang Guo couple of times?

I heard this series also had WCY defeat the 4 combined young Greats with ease.

I don't know if LOCH '94 did that, but LOCH '82 definitely did.

They kept the 7 days 7 nights narrative so it wasn't really with ease (speaking of '94), but the fight scene did have all four rushing Wang Chongyang and all getting knocked down.

That's what was depicted in LOCH '82 as well, but there was no mention of how long they had been fighting.

That scene in '94 is probably what set the blueprints for me thinking WCY is only slightly better than the 4 Greats. They had a nice flashes of light changing along with the narrative and it gave it a real epic feel of them fighting nonstop while the sun went up and down, leaving me to conclude that he definitely only edged out the win rather than a severe stompage.
