I was reading Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini today, and towards the beginning of the story there's a fairly standard duel for the day (it's set during the French Revolution) in which there are two duelists and each has a second/witness to support them. In reading this I started to wonder- was there any formalized set of rules for dueling in old China? Or did people basically just call each other outside and start taking shots at each other?
