Yes, there are too many things that can be a variant when we do inflation adjustment etc. For example in the past no piracy, no dvd, no home entertainment etc. That is why people just flock it out to watch Gone With The Wind.

I dun think Gone With The Wind will sell the same number of tickets if it's release this year the same as Avatar.

And if we're saying Avatar got bigger BO numbers because of higher ticket price of 3D and IMAX, well let us wait until Alice comes out in March. Let see if Alice can reach 700M like what Avatar is going to reach next week

What ever all the haters said, Dances with the smurf, Pocahaontas or whatever , JC is still the King and he laugh his *** to the bank while haters cry their heart out with extreme hateness because they just can't comprehend why people keep going to the cinema watching Avatar again and again lol.

JC knows the formula, that's why he's so successful.

Make something unique, or new that people have not seen before, and combine with a familiar theme, its bound to succeed.

Of course, the right budget, director and word of mouth matter greatly.

omg, i feel a kay moment right here. no ****!

you could say the same thing about any movie, if you take it out of it's time, no matter if it's an awesome movie, a successful one, or a stinky piece o poo. put seed of chucky back in 1930 and that movie would do phenomenally well. take a movie from 2085 and run it now and it would blow avatar out of the water. it's like saying if england had the atomic bomb during the revolutionary war, they would have won.

my point is, a large part of avatar's success is due to the fact that it does command higher prices. even compared to a semi-recent movie like spiderman, a large part of why it made more money is because movie tickets are more expensive now and it's largely shown in premium theatres like imax.

To be completely objective, we need to have a tally of the total ticket purchased. Plus there are more people now then say 50 years ago. So we have to take into consideration the population. Then, we can decide which movie is the best selling movie of all time.

It's a successful movie and will probably win the Oscar for best picture. Whether it is deserved or not, that's another issue.

We also have to take into account that movie budget are much higher now a days, which could play a part in ticket price being raise. And we also have the bad economy right now as well. That may play a part too when counting ticket sell.

Not to mention, internet bootlegging, etc.

Of course that is if we add population growth into the equation.

But again, the box office people most likely doesn't care which movie is top seller, as long as a movie sells big on its own right, that's good enough.

and there are more movies in release etc compare to how many movies you think release in the cinema in 30s. Do you think they got Cineplex

Do you know actually how many times Gone With The Wind re-release in theatre. Check it out.

I already said about your point of higher ticket price, 3D, IMAX etc and let us wait and have a bet if Alice in Wonderland will do the same "WONDER" that Avatar does. My point is, it's always the story and the film making that counts not ticket price.

If we use your formula, I'll bet all movies will reached 1 billion easily every year. Because the higher ticket price each year should make it easy. But as you see how long do you think Titanic BO record retain - 12 years.

Anyway to put salt on the wound lol, this is Avatar current domestic BO: US706,905,000

I managed to borrow a copy of Avatar from my local library, it is so much better watching it full screen with my new 1080p 50 inch screen Plasma Screen Hdtv;Happy Black Friday,so many people in there. It does bring out the detailed computer graphics out because you do need a better widerscreen to watch it at the comforts of your own home theater.
