Default Google's new approach to China

    http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/...-to-china.html

The war on information is only going to get worse now that almost everyone is connected to the Internet. It's scary to think how easy it is for hackers to find ways to get past security.

It will be interesting to see how China will react to Google uncensoring their search results now.

That's pretty interesting and cool that there was a 'sophisticated' attack on Google aimed at Chinese human rights activist's Gmail accounts.

Pretty cool of Google to ***** slap them back.

If Google is gone in China, would Bing try to replace it?

Baidu will most likely take over Google's marketshare. Not much of a ***** slap - per se. Google wasn't really winning the war against Baidu for market share - more like a gamble or retreat.

I wonder if Google was doing better in China, whether they would take this step.
What are you fighting for? Just mix them into pissing beef balls, stupid.

Why any Mainland Chinese person who grew up in the USA would still want Taiwan to fall under China after everything the Mainland does to oppress and control it's own people I'll never understand.

    What Suzaku said.

FYI, Google CN currently is still censoring its search results (out of concerns for Google CN employees). Most likely, in a few weeks, it'll just pull out entirely.

If google can make a big profit then it's stupid for google to pull it out. Just follow the law of the land, why would google go against the bottom line? Business is business.

Because you have to be responsible in how you do your business. And it's not business is business if a government tries to hack into your system and can possibly steal your proprietary tech.

Profit for profit's sake is what leads to the use of too much lead in products. Or melamine in our milk.

Time and again, the PRC has proven itself to be a irresponsible member of the business community.

It will be interesting to see what happens when China's real estate bubble blows up.

A big part of Google's success is built on their motto of 'don't be evil'. There seems to be controversy with some of Google's practices, but for this part, they've stepped up to it.

RE goodrick, Google only has a few hundred employees, ie, virtually no on-the-ground presence. That's why it's not that painful for them to pull out.

apparently, google doesn't need china and china doesn't need google....right now. google was making very little headway in that market. i would know since this is the industry i'm in. their marketshare, while not abysmal, is not good. but right now, it doesn't need this market to grow.

the real losers are american companies that are trying to expand their e-marketing in china. google was able to provide a familiar format and american laws to online advertising in china, but now we'll have to rely on baidu, which brings into play language barriers and questionable chinese laws.

and bing, though much hyped in the US, has not really expanded outside of the country. i believe it's only available here, france, singapore, and possibly canada. they have a long way to go.

Actually, the biggest losers are the Chinese people. Despite 'censoring' Google.cn, that engine remained vastly superior to Baidu with regards to the degree of censorship. In addition, Baidu now has a total monopoly on the market...which, quite frankly, means that quality can only go down.

    From cnet:
"We like the Chinese people. We like our Chinese employees," Schmidt said last week on Google's fourth-quarter earnings call. "We remain committed to being there."
