    Default Travelling Preparations ~

Okies I'm so looking forward to my trip to turkey (note, not the animal) next month so I'm posting up a travelling preparations thread.

What are the stuffs you guys absolutely must bring along when you travel! (minus the obvious e.g. passport, cash, clothings or toiletries etc)

    For myself,

    1. A spare pair of shoes ~ ironically, there had been instances where my shoes REALLY give way in the middle of a trip.
    2. Spare jacket (when travelling during colder months; sometimes more than just a spare ~ i was often accused of travelling like going on a fashion show - vanity of women maybe?)
    3. Journal book ~ I try to write at the end of each day because by the time I return back home i would have forgotten 70% of the impression i had when I visited the place.
    4. a crucifix (to be spiritually consoled)
    5. a foldable hand luggage (in case i bought too many souvenirs ~ im a horrid shopper ^o^)
    6. mp3 player =p
    7. spare SD cards & camera battery (I once took so many pictures that i used up two fully charged battery in the course of one day - I was in Rome)

A photocopy of your passport and the address of the US embassy - in case you lose your passport.

    Spare cash.

Address and name of the hotel/motel/hostel where you're staying in the local language.

That is the list of must for me, I always figured that I could buy more clothes or other items, if necessary.

make sure you'll be able to use your cell phone overseas or where to buy one there. you'll need it in case of emergencies. and make sure you let your credit card companies know ahead of time as well, or they might freeze your account if you try to use it there.

I'll second Suzaku's suggestion. You will not believe the amount of hassle you will get if you lose your passport!

i know that actually, cos my aunt who was with us in our trip to LA had her handbag stolen, and there were so many problems to settle just so that she can fly home. and there were more problems after she came home.

If you need to take medication with you abroad, you'll need to make sure the medication is legal in the country you're visiting.

It's best to have a doctor's letter with you, so you can prove that the drugs are for medical use. It saves you from getting into trouble with customs and the authorities.

Make sure your shoes/spares are flat and sturdy, and protect your feet well. The roads and roadways of Turkey have a way of really getting to your shoes, especially if you're going to be walking a lot.

Are you female? If you are, please do not go anywhere alone. Make sure you are accompanied, if not by a trusted male person, then by 2 female persons.

When shopping in the bazaar (yeah, the big touristy indoor one) in Istanbul, remember your route and stay in a group. It's easy to lose one's sense of direction once one is deep within the innards of the bazaar.

Before anyone jumps on me, I'm not saying that Turkey or the Turkish are dangerous (I've been to Turkey before and I like the place/people enough to want to visit again), but there is no point spoiling a holiday through one's momentary lack of judgment or impulse.

Put the smaller amount of cash in the wallet/purse that you'd be bringing out more often for daily purchases. Put the larger amount of (spare) cash in a separate place (e.g. money belt or hidden wallet around the neck under your clothes) that you'd only take out in your hotel room. If you lose your wallet/purse, at least you'd still have cash to get help.

A length of nylon rope (maybe 2 metres), a handful of clothespegs and a small container of powdered detergent. Where possible, bring clothes that you can easily wash, dry and wear again, especially if you'd be staying in the same hotel for at least 2-3 days. Beats buying! The rope can also be used to tie luggage later on!

Thanks dear ~ so far i hadn't run into any problems bringing along prescribed medication (i dont think it's a controlled drug in most places), but i think i'll check with the embassy, just in case.

im packing in an extra pair of walking boots, and mended the sole of the one im going to wear.

    Are you female?
    Yeah thankfully so. *giggles*

Im travelling with my parents ~ im not exactly the most adventurous sort that will go to a foreign place on my own.

im the sort of person that can get lost even in my own neighborhood, and yet had absolutely no idea on how to use GPS...im clinging to my mom who's got a keen sense of direction though...yea, i inherited my bad sense of direction from my dad, unfortunately. precisely why i cannot drive ~ if i couldnt find my way out with my two feet, i dont think i can ever trust myself to land in the right place with a car.

I don't know what kind of adventures you are planning. I prefer to bring following things with me. These things will really come in handy in camping travel. But don't put them in the hand bag, place them in the luggage. Otherwise you will have to leave them in the customs.

    lighter
multi-function pocket knife (preferable if spoon and pork attached)
    small flashlight
