    Default Problem connecting router

I need help and I'm hoping a kind soul in this forum can assist with my problem. After a recent power outage, I can no longer access the Internet through my D-Link DI 524 router, either with my desktop or laptop. If I hook up my computer directly to my modem, I have Internet connection. So at least I know the modem is not the issue.

I have tried all sorts of methods:
    1. Unplug and shut down both modem and router
    2. Repeatedly reboot the computer
    3. Hit the reset button on the back of the router and held it for 20 secs
    4. Using the D-Link router installation cd to re-install the router. The cd would stall at the router configure stage

Also, my ip address has changed. Before the power outage, it was 192.168.0.1. Now, when I look up my ip address through the cmd command, it is 192.168.1.1

I will forever be grateful for any help to fix this.

I'm not a network expert but it sounds like something in your router got fried from the power outage. The 3rd step takes the router back to manufacturer's original settings and if that doesn't work either.. I don't know what's wrong with it.

It's a long shot but maybe you can try to update the router's firmware.
I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code.

Have you tried to connect to the router setting page itself? It varies with the brand but the manual should list some sort of ip address for the router itself. If you can access the router settings page, look for a connection setting section. These typically have connect on demand or always connect, and may have some account passwords for your ISP stored.

Sometimes they require some additional steps like first connecting your PC directly to your modem, then disconnect your PC from the modem, connect your router to the modem, and finally connect the PC to the router before cloning the ip address of the PC.

I used the installation cd to configure the router. But that didn't work. It kept stalling. So I am at a lost how to fix this.

When I called D-Link technical support, they want to charge me $30 for 1/2 hour of phone time. The last few times I called, it took more than 1 hour to fix my problem (this was when I still had warranty on my router). I always have a hard time understanding the technicians because the the tech support dept is in India and all technicians have very thick accents. I can barely understand their English. Aish, I might as well buy a new router and get free tech support that way.

I am not a network specialist, so just suppositions:

    - do you have firewall installed on your PC? Sometimes after a power outage, there is a chance that firewall is blocking your router to access the Internet.

    - did you check the IP settings. IP settings could become corrupt and need to be reset. Do you know what are the IP settings for your router? You can find out your IP address by going to - Start/Run/IPConfig /All and see if they look OK to you.

That's all I can think of now!

Hey, sorry I'm seeing this late, so you mayhave already solved it, but it looks like your PC is taking up the Router address -- the 192.168.1.1 is normally the address reserved for the router. See if you can do a windows system restore on the PC where you installed the router software to a date before the power outage. If that doesn't work, manually deinstall the software and delete the wireless device from your PC, then install the software for the router and then install the wireless device back on your PC. that should eliminate the conflict. Good luck.

Hey KChill, nope I still haven't fixed my problem. I just called my internet provider (Verizon) 2 days ago. Spent 2 hours on the phone. Nothing has worked.

I will try your advice. Thank you for your help. Hopefully, it works. Otherwise, I give up.
