Default The Golden Wheel Monk Glorification Thread

SPCNET Forum member Wu Wudi would have a cow if he sees this thread, but he doesn't visit very often these days, so...

The Golden Wheel Monk - on the one hand, he's supposed to pose a serious threat to the Greats. On the other hand, he's infamous as a choke artist who has a knack for pulling defeat from the jaws of certain victory.

So the Golden Wheel Monk has become sort of a joke in these parts; Wu Wudi once described him as a "jabroni," and I don't think the Golden Wheel Monk's reputation has ever recovered.

But we are in the business of recalibration and so, for our latest glorification treatment: the Golden Wheel Monk.

He was very easygoing in the company of Guo Xiang. Despite Guo Xiang scolding him all the time, and taunting him with how Yang Guo was going to give him the beating of his life, he still taught Guo Xiang all he could during the time they were together.

The funny thing about the Golden Wheel Monk is that he always struck me as kind of mellow for a villain. Sure, he was nominal "bad guy" in ROCH, but he didn't seem all that unpleasant a character on a personal level. He seemed to be the kind of guy you could knock down a few beers with, which is a quality most wuxia villains don't have.

Ken, I don't see how a villain, who used a weak girl as a hostage, can be glorified. If he has any dignity, he could have challenge KJ for a death match instead of using a weak girl to force KJ to commit suicide.

It wasn't his decision. It was Mongke's decision to use Guo Xiang as a hostage, and threaten to burn her if Guo Jing didn't surrender. GWM was actually upset about losing his disciple, but if he resisted, the Lamaists under Mongol rule would suffer instead.

That is true in 3rd edition, but not in 2nd edition.

Either way, whether 2nd or 3rd, he was just following orders and thus you can say he was loyal and disciplined. Guo Jing was with Genghis on his travel and he certainly didn't mellow that old man out much. And GJ was the old man's blue eye boy, his future Golden Sabre Son in Law. If he had limited options, what do you think an outsider would have?

The question was "what do you think an outsider would have?"

    The answer: "an ear."

An outsider would have an ear (like any other human).

That's all there is to it.

In fact, I consider it an advanced representation of ARTS. In this stage, simple, truthful responses are crafted to answer complex questions.

Anyway, back to the topic, here's 1 for Doubling His Internal Energy (TM) AFTER he already reached Great-level, and another 1 for reaching the highest level of Dragon Elephant Prajna known to be reached by mankind.

Totally dig the 'Bayanirool' incarnation of the guy, but as a book character, he doesn't appeal to me as much.

Still kind of like him, though. With him being one of the chief antagonists, it's a matter of "my enemy's enemy is my friend"...
And as an Inner-Asian guy, he's bound to be at least somewhat cool. Simple as that...

I love goldie, he's the most sympathic villain in wuxia. I almost cheered for him during the final battle in ROCH.

Being a Golden Wheel Monk fan is like being a Clippers fan. You *know* he's going to choke in the end, but you can't help cheering for him anyway because he tries so hard.

To be honest, I think his choking reputation is blown out of proportion. He's easily a Greats-level type of guy. Maybe people think of him more like a Kim Clijsters at the beginning of her career. That's the thing with these forums, people attach words like "choking" to a martial artist and get caught up on that word and ignore his other MANY strong attributes.
