Default Books on Fundamental of Genetics

Can anyone recommend by titles or by author, books on fundamentals of Genetics that would make a good foundation-builder for understanding of this subject?

    Thanks!

Actually, it can be a textbook or any resource book as long as it helps greatly in building the foundation. A book which I can refer to as a guide every now and then.

Is Wiki reliable? As of those things that they mentioned, I don't really understand. I could print out the resources but it'll need lots of paper. You know, reading a large chunk of text online has a lullaby effect on me.

it really depends on how comprehensive you want it. also, are you looking at general genetics or specific genetics (ie. population genetics, molecular genetics, human genetics, etc)?

most science wiki stuff are generally pretty accurate (heck, textbooks can be wrong, too). plus, wiki is easier to search for specifics if you don't plan on reading the whole thing.

also, are you just going to read up on genetics for fun or is it for a class?

Protip- do not ever use wikipedia for scholarly resources. A quick google search or pubmed review article helps you more (health sciences that is).

Wiki is good for a basic foundation and a quick read, but avoid it if you want reliability and accuracy, since it's free for all to edit.

But what I do is that I look up the subject in wiki, and dig through the cited sources.

My dear, there is a PERFECT book for you:

    $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://www.connecticutvalleybiological.com/images/pub656.jpg')

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/006...cm_rdp_product

I've read a little bit of it and it's much more interesting than a textbook. Since you like cartoons, I think you will enjoy it.

pubmed articles are only good if you already have a good background knowledge and are doing specific research.

if you just want the quick and dirty overview, google is about as reliable as wiki...

again, it really depends on the what level of specificity you need it at.

i learned my basic genetics in school via textbooks, and i don't recommend it -- it's BORING.

i read this book a few years ago, and it seemed pretty "layman" while being interesting:
    http://www.amazon.com/Genome-Autobio...5948312&sr=1-3

never read this book, but i've read the author's other books, and he's pretty good too:
    http://www.amazon.com/Language-Genes...xp_grid_pt_1_2

interestingly, this trilogy does explain a lot of basic science concepts in a very concise, easy to understand manner, though you'll have to be somewhat familiar with the fantasy writer's imagined world to enjoy the inside jokes:
    http://www.amazon.com/Science-Discwo...5948676&sr=1-2

again, my familiarity with science rather skews my perception of how useful these books may be for a beginner, so maybe read the first few pages to gauge the readability.

Thank you, you lovely bunch, for the lotta information which Cedrey trully appreciate it!

Yingying: It's for class, and general genetics (starting from Mendelian's theory). My lecturer's too longwinded. He could spend 2 hours on only 4 slides, which include a great deal of supposedly irrelevant stuff.

Dr Han: I'll buy that! Ceddie wouldn't refused a doktor's advice! Actually, something to do with health science could help.

Xiang'er: I prefer book compilation actually. I'm not so into reading online, I'll sneak into playing Bejewelled after reading the first two/three para.

Mi Precioso (PJ): You know what's best for me, huh? I might keep an eye look out for that. Picture defeats more than a thousand words.

Mawguy: Thanks for the recommendations! I'll check out the books in first and third link. Oh yeah, and PJ's picture book too!

Thanks darling, but this name sounds a bit creepy after I just watched Lord of the Rings... How these 2 words were viciously, savagely uttered in there (albeit en ingles), it has almost left a scar in my mind.

Nonetheless, do check out the Cartoon Guide to Genetics. You'll gain insight through interesting stories such as the genetic explanation for Jacob's Flock.

actually, there are moderators on wiki and it's pretty hard to edit "important" articles. i tried to edit an article for work, and my entry got deleted by a moderator. it was flagged and we had a debate, which went on to a third moderator for arbitration. it gave me a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes.

you should probably ask the professor to recommend a book, then see if you can check it out in the library. it saves you a lot more money

I asked. You know what he replied that I nearly fell off my chair?

"Your own coursebook is good enough (which is not true) and the next thing you need - is me!

BTW, he is a partime lecturer, so we don't see him often. It's like two weeks once.
