    Thumbs up

Hey great translation and great chapter.

Ding Ding Dang Dang is so unpredictable unlike any other female character in Jin Yong novel though the pair resemble somewhat like that of Guo Jing and Huang Rong pair. I wonder if Ding Dang would stick with Shi potian or choose shi zhong yu when she finds out the truth. It would be a great shock to her.

Xia Ke Xing (Ode to Gallantry) - Chapter 9

Chapter 9 of Ode to Gallantry starts with a ... bed-scene!

In addition, watch out for the following:
    • Three new characters.
    • New martial arts techniques.
    • And Shi Potian's first fight in which he is the aggressor! (Hmm, now why did this otherwise sweet and gentle young man start a fight?)
Also, check out the Facts and Figures of OTG for:
    • Rice dumplings (picture included).
    • The Dragon Boat Festival.

    Enjoy!

    You're welcome!

I usually try to do a bit more if I can spare the time ... just in case I get all tied up with work again. There are some random thoughts and questions at the OTG Blog, just for fun!

great update. It is so good to finally able to read the "real" story rather than view the contaminated version from TVB. Everything begins to make a lot more sense. thank you, thank you, thank you.

A bit OT. But I guess it's the best place since all read XKX here.

If there's is going to be another adaption of XKX, who will u choose to play the following role?

    Shi Potian/Shi Zhongyu
    Ding Dang
    Shi Jian
    Shi Qing
    Min Rou
    Bai Wanjian
    Xie Yanke
    Dr. Bei
    Ah Xiu
    Ding Bushan
    Ding Busi
    Si Xiaochui
    Hua Wanzhi

All these character has appeared in the translation liao.

More or less, all the same people in the China adaptation! The cast was generally chosen well, with Shi Jian and A'Xiu looking (and even acting) just like the description in the book!

But I'd change the wardrobe and make-up persons, though. I don't quite care about how Shi Zhongyu looks, but I think Shi Potian's overall appearance was a little bit too girly. I can accept that he might be a little scrawny due to poor nutrition while he was growing up, but he didn't have to have that curly hair and "coconut tree" on the top of his head (in the earlier episodes)!

btw: I'll be doing a detailed review of the China adaptation once I'm finished with the translation. I guess it's OK to reveal this now, because OTG is almost halfway done. Besides, I think the China adaptation (with Wu Jian) has become a rare collector's item for JY wuxia die-hards.

You are right. The costume and make up person really need to be change. If TVB can produce nice costume for it's low-budget series, why can't this series?
Shi Zhongyu's hairstyle is especially awful and he looks even more girly that SPT.

Wu Jian did a very good job as SPT/SZY and his look quite fit the book description (I remember the book said he has big eyes), but he's too short. SPT supposed to be tall. That's his only weakness. Again, he did a awesome job as STP/SZY.

But, I would change the actress who played Hua Wanzhi. I'd choose a more beautiful actress to play Hua Wanzhi.

On the other hand, the actor who played Bai Wanjian certainly need to be retained to play the role again. He's perfect for the role.

Yes, the Wu Jian version is very hard to find now. I'm glad that I managed to buy it before it was taken off the shelves (nearly gave it a miss because of a misunderstanding).

Recycle the costumes from big-budget series. Haven't you noticed?

Again, he did a awesome job as STP/SZY.
True, true! He brought out the difference between Mr Blur and Mr Scumbag very well!

But, I would change the actress who played Hua Wanzhi. I'd choose a more beautiful actress to play Hua Wanzhi.
I'm not particularly bothered about how Hua Wanzi looks like, but yeah, more eye-candy would be nice. :-)

    Agree!

The salesman at the video shop where I bought my copy actually dissuaded me from buying it, saying that it's "old", and suggested "newer" productions instead! But the die-hard JY wuxia fan won the day, of course!

Actually, the production values of Linked Cities are way much better than XKX, although Linked Cities is another low-budget production. The script of Linked Cities is tighter, and the acting more natural. Best of all, the martial choreography is so much better, especially with all those actors who have martial arts background on the cast (not just Wu Yue [Di Yun], but also Du Zhiguo [Wan Zhenshan], Liuxiao Lingtong [Hua Tiegan], Yu Chenghui [Mei Niansheng] and Ji Chunhua [XueDao Zu]).

Heheh, one of these days, I'm going to have to tidy up my Linked Cities review for wuxiapedia.

Its like watching ZJZ series for the scenery and fancy random disgusting CGI use.
While linked city is awesome martial arts on display instead of random flying and slapping

Ode to Gallantry by Jin Yong has been *UPDATED*!

In the last update, Shi Potian found himself on a boat in the middle of the Long River with an angry old woman, an immobile young girl and a temperamental old man. Now, something strange was happening:
First, the old woman said to Shi Potian: "This old fellow wants to force you into the river so that you will drown. Therefore, you must remember this: Use whatever move that he is using against you. Do it swiftly and with power; the more forceful it is, the better it will be."

Then, she said to the old man: "Ding the Fourth, would it not be easy to have him killed? Just go ahead and use some moves that you have not taught him, and I assure you, he will not be able to handle them at all."
Why was the old woman pitting Shi Potian and Ding Busi against each other? What gain was there for her? Find out in the latest update of Chapter 9 of Ode to Gallantry today!

    Wonderful translation as always.

I particularly like the fact that you incorporated the 3rd edition changes, and made a note about them.

    Thanks,
