However, when put in a position where he is part of the issue, he displays good courage and character, and is not easily intimidated by others. Years of being bullied by his mother molded him well.
Besides what Ian wrote, I'd like to add:
When Xie Yanke laughed, it was in response to the little beggar's strange "name". He was caught completely unaware and the laugh was a genuine laugh of total amusement. There was nothing frightening about the laugh at all, and the little beggar -- being simple and innocent -- picked up on the non-threatening emotional tone of the laugh. So he laughed along. This is an example of "social referencing", where children look to adults and their behaviour in order to respond to a particular situation.

I have read it before, of course, and so has Ian Liew. Kidd is reading it right now in Chinese, at about half a chapter ahead of the translation. Isn't it good that there are people giving you glimpses of what's coming up?

HuangYushi thank you so much for the translations. This story seems like a very interesting one and I'm looking forward to your further efforts!
Glad you are enjoying it! Once the scene is set by the first couple of chapters, the story will bounce along in unexpected ways. Hang around, and you'll find out.

I personally rate Xia Ke Xing as the most delightful of JY's novels. Lu Ding Ji was funny, but Xia Ke Xing just warms the heart... .. most of it anyway.

Wow, this story is great. I really like the interaction between the boy and XY, it's good for quite a few laughs, can't wait to see how this develops.

Don't worry, take your time! No matter what, you are still at least half a chapter ahead of me ... unless the haze comes back next week as predicted and we get "hazed" in by the darurat order again ...

The darurat order? What is that?

Edit: nevermind, google is my friend and I found out already
Doesn't sound good at all, hope you don't get a return haze and no risk for peoples health. Good luck.

Eek - it's due to come back next week? At least there's a bright side - those 50 surgical masks I bought aren't a total waste.

After reading further, I notice something about GouZhaZhong that I didn't notice from watching the series. This little guy is pretty stubborn. If he thinks something is right and he should do it, no one can dissuade him. For example, when he was defending the old man. He didn't have any special feelings for the old man. He didn't know that old man at all. But because he thought the old man was the good guy and the Everlasting Happiness gang was the bad guys, and good guy should not be killed by bad guy, he stood bravely in front of the old man, blocking him from the EH gang. Even after being beaten and under the threat of death he still refused to budge. And then there's his 'never beg' principle. Even when his feet hurt like hell and he was very very tired, he still refused to ask XYK to stop (XYK was holding his hand and running at high speed and then climbing up a steep cliff). In the series, they did show him defending the old man, but the series can't explain how frighten he was at that time like in the book and I don't remember the series showing him being beaten. Also, if I remember correctly, the series didn't show how much he struggled going up the cliff (with his hurting feet).

Haha, a little more preview for you guys.

No, it didn't. Instead, they added the scene with the camels. Gouzazhong's hurting feet and stubborn refusal (in asking for a ride) was shown when Xie Yanke seized a camel to ride.

Adaptations are fun, especially those that are done well, but nothing beats the story in the novel because we get a chance to explore the thoughts of the characters.

Hey Yushi, did you remove the pictures of people from the Facts and Figures article, or did my recent changes screw it up? I can still see the symbols and the puppy though.
