    Heh heh.

Okay, looks like I was wrong. Gouzazhang wouldn't beg Xie Yanke anyway. And Xie Yanke is doing a little more than not safeguarding his "student"- seems like he is doing stuff specifically to kill him...

A lot of stuff to read, though- thanks!

My understanding of this passage seems to be a bit different from yours when I read it in chinese. Here is the passage in my book.

Actually, I don't think that you are entirely wrong. Gouzazhong was afraid of making requests because of his previous experience with his mother. But he did not tell Xie Yanke about it. As readers, we have the privilege of knowing what happened, but since he did not explain to Xie Yanke the full reasons behind his refusal to beg, Xie Yanke had no way of "changing" the situation to his favour. If Xie Yanke knew, there might be still a slight chance that he would explain the Gouzazhong that he is not his mother and therefore, will not hit him for asking.

    Just rambling...

It was Merdeka Day, so I had a bit more time to sit down and type until my eyeballs were about to fall out! Don't worry, I probably won't catch up with you until there's another holiday. My brother is getting married in like 3 weeks, so there's a lot to do in the run-up. Relatives will start descending upon us next week, so I won't have that much time to come up with long long updates. Plus, Chapter 4 is even longer than Chapter 3!

You have a good point. I'll take a look at the passage again and come up with something that reflects its meaning/essence more accurately. Thanks!

PS: You're getting very good at reading Chinese! Keep it up!
I've got a new "project" for you, if you are interested. Check your PM!

You're welcome! Do you want to guess what the mystery is?

Of course, people who have read the book (or who know of the story through any other way) can't play; or there would be plenty of unwanted spoilers around here!

Huh? I must have missed something here, why would anyone need presentation to one's own clan leader by an outsider. This is too weird for words. At least I assume that the clan leader is not Gouzazhong, or is he?

Just finished reading through this thread for the first time in years since SPT found the black steel symbol in chapter one.

First and foremost, congrats to Ian Liew. Second among the translators to have a kid that i know of.

Second, Thanks heaps HuangYushi for translating chapter 2 and 3.

Chapter 3 must be the most heartwarming chapter i had ever read from Jin Yong.

It is weird, all right! And it will get even weirder as Chapter 4 progresses...

As for whether the clan leader is Gouzazhong or not, someone has already answered that question.

So now, the biggest mystery is: HOW DID IT HAPPEN?

Hi Han, it's good to hear from you again since the Hokkien words thread disappeared with the Great Crash! How're things going with you? Still very busy? I'm glad you enjoyed Chap 3. Yeah, it's pretty special to me too.

Hmm, when I originally wondered if Gouzazhong was clan leader I thought it might be because his unknown father or mother was former clan leader and passed away and then the rest of the clan went looking for him. And of course 3 of the members have seen Gouzazhong before and suspected he was with XY.

But since it seems they want to set him up as a sacrificial goat the story must be different. Maybe when they went looking for a victim one of the 3 attackers remembered the incident and their suspicion about the observer. That would make for not only a good sacrificial goat but also a way to get XY involved. As everyone knows where XY can be found it would be easy to check the nearby villages for news and find out that Gouzazhong was still with XY.

Don't think they had the opportunity to contact Goughazong as normally they would not be able to reach the peak without XY knowing and in the villages he alwasy was with XY so Gougazhong must be unaware of all this.

That's my best guess so far. With this trouble starting I sure hope Gouzazhong has figured out the secret of those statues and therefore has a far more superiour knowledge of martial arts than anyone suspects. Don't see how he can survive the plotting and conspiracies otherwise (except maybe best defense: pure blind luck ).

Ah! But somebody DID pass away in the Clan of Eternal Happiness and left the position of leadership open ...

    The plot thickens!

I haven't read this novel before, but I believe that the clan didn't choose the boy for scapegoating purpose. I mean the main purpose of the clan is to oppose the isle of heroes, right? So why would they be afraid of the isle?

Yes. GouZhaZhong was meant to be the clan's sacrificial goat. But why him? Read further.

Things are actually less simple and more sinister than this. As SevenFortunes said, this story is pretty weird ... and with twists and turns that are rather uncharacteristic of Jin Yong, it will get weirder.

If you (meaning crazy_horse, not kidd) want to hazard a guess and receive the next update via PM before it is posted here, go ahead! I still have a few more "special update PMs" to give out!

Sorry, kidd. You don't qualify to play because you've seen the serialised adaptation of the novel.

I'm not playing. Just giving out a hint, not vying for your prize. And it's just a teeny-tiny hint only mah. Didn't actually spoil anything. Still a lot of suspense left..
You did this yourself too. I'm just following your footsteps.
