Default Sympathy for a laid-off coworker

    Hi,

One of my coworkers got laid off unexpectedly. She is still in the company for a while longer looking for job. I don't know her very well, but I worked with her on some volunteer work. I want to express my sympathy and wish her good luck. How should I do it? I thought about buying a card. Is there something else I can buy/do to uplift her spirit (and let her know ppl do care)?

I have no specific idea of making her happy. But I think its better to do something than doing nothing. Please, make sure she realizes that you cared for her. Good luck!

Maybe after you've done something, you could let us know how was the experience and her reaction.

Accompany the well-wish message card with signatures from her coworkers and a small bouquet of flowers should be nice.

I am not sure about this. I suggest not to buy her a card = memory. Why not buy her lunch/coffee?

A card and a gift card for grocery store or shop/restaurant that she likes.

    Hi -

Well, it's not uncommon to be laid off these days. It may not even be bad news sometimes. What's your friend's situation?

What's the age? job? location? family circumstance? Not that you have to fill the detail, but any of these factors will influence whether it's going to be a real headache for him/her. If your friend's young (not out of college for too long) I'd even say it's a rite of passage at this point, in which case, it's a cause for celebration.

It's almost like getting a tattoo.

    Thanks for all your suggestions.

We ended up getting her a card signed by many coworkers, and some flowers. It was good for her.
