I cannot believe a thread has not been made yet regarding this brand new, large-scale, epic series starring Vincent Jiao. Many people have been waiting for this series for the past year and a half ... and it finally started broadcasting on CCTV-1 on August 8. According to an online interview, they are also planning to air the series in primetime on CCTV-8 directly after its first broadcast, which makes sense considering CCTV-8 is the usual network for costume dramas, especially mythology-based ones.

News releases from China have recently confirmed that 传说 has already surpassed the ratings record for its current timeslot on CCTV-1 (probably due partly to the fact that most regular CCTV-1 viewers ain't used to dramas like this). The numbers are still going up every night.

In case you don't already know, 传说 covers the earliest period of Chinese mythology (Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, Xia Dynasty), so it acts as a "prequel" to the entire 宝莲灯 (Lotus Lantern) trilogy, of which Vincent Jiao is also the star. Last year's 宝莲灯前传 starts off in the Shang Dynasty, which is just about where this series comes to an end.

So now I have a pretty good idea of all of the folklore/legends that are incorporated into the epic story.

I'm guessing all of the main myth from Shan Hai Jing as well as all of the other major legends from the Three Sovereigns and Xia Dynasty time period are accounted for.

The song is 三生石 (San Sheng Shi), which was supposed to be the end theme for the series but has since been replaced. It is performed by 周奇奇 (Zhou Qi Qi) and the star of the series, 焦恩俊 (Jian En Jun) himself

I have watch the first episode

The story is about Shen Nong, the botanical god (Vincent Jiao). It's setting is about 2000 BC.
So the costumes is looked like it still made from animal's hide.

Yes, Shen Nong is the protagonist of the story, but the series is hardly about him.

Like Bao Lian Deng Qian Zhuan, which incorporated ALL of the mythology and folklore from the Shang Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty (2000 years comprised) while at the same time focusing on one central storyline and the same philosophical themes, 传说 is another TRULY large-scale epic that tells ALL of the mythology of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors period and the Xia Dynasty, the earliest traces of Chinese history and folklore.

Shen Nong is in the focus, much like Yang Jian (Er Lang Shen) is the focus of Bao Lian Deng (the stories are all told from his perspective), but 传说 also has a fairly large ensemble of cast members playing some of the most renowned mythological figures of the time period.

Much of the story of the series is taken from Shan Hai Jing. Aside from that, Chang E Ben Yue (the origins of Chang E) is included, as well as Wan Wu Shan Xia De Chuan Shuo (Yu Gong), the Great Flood, the war between the Yellow Emperor and Chi You, Nu Wa and Fu Xi, and probably a lot more folklore/mythology that I cannot comment on ...

... because I personally have only just started watching the series.

Also, I wanted to add that the beginning of the series takes place around 3000 B.C. (5000 years ago), not 2000 B.C. This was the beginning of any trace of recordable Chinese history/mythology.

EDIT: Just finished watching the third episode, and Shen Nong is absent from the entire episode. Even though Jiao En Jun does not even appear, several of the other major characters' storylines are advanced.

I've watch till episode 12, the story is about Shen Nong, Hua Shen (Yu Di's sister), and Yu Di's daughters (number 2, 5, 6) adventure to find an item to save the humankind. In the adventure they met peoples in ancient history, like Chang E, Hou Yi, NuWa, etc. They even fight the Nian Shou! (and the story about how they fight it become a tradition to celebrate Chinese New Year).

Many people in China have been waiting for this series since its live television premiere celebration back in February of last year.

This is one of the Four Large-Scale Epic Mythology Series (大型神话电视连续剧),which also consist of the Bao Lian Deng Trilogy, Journey to the West (Zhejiang and Zhang Ji Zhong versions), and Feng Shen Yan Yi (new 80-episode version). Unless, of course, you also count the four Liao Zhai Zhi Yi series and the two Chinese Paladin series as well, for a grand total of six large-scale mythology series ... even though Liao Zhai Zhi Yi is technically an anthology and Chinese Paladin is not exactly authentic folklore (the story is completely original).

In terms of sheer anticipation and potential, I would put this series behind Bao Lian Deng Qian Zhuan and pretty much above everything else on the list.

The series just finished its first broadcast run on CCTV-1 in the 10:30pm timeslot and is now re-airing in the 7:30pm timeslot on CCTV-8 currently.

I'm close to halfway through the series now, and I would say my favorite characters are Shen Nong/Yan Di, Huang Di (Yellow Emperor), Fu Xi, Yang Jian (Er Lang Shen), Hou Yi (God of Archery), Gong Gong (God of Water), Chi You (War God), Fei Lian (God of Wind), Xing Tian (Headless Giant), Bai Hu (White Tiger), and Mo Di (Demon Emperor). Shen Nong and Mo Di tied as my #1 favorites.

I don't understand why director Wu Jia Tai intended on making Huang Di as conceited as he is in the series. Trying to portray Shen Nong as being so superior to him, in terms of personality and likeability. Nonetheless, Huang Di still has a lot of good attributes.

Seeing Vincent Jiao En Jun and Roy Liu De Kai on screen together is absolutely incredible. The two biggest participants in the large-scale myth circuit have AMAZING on-screen chemistry. Liu De Kai's portrayal of Fu Xi is nearly as good as (if not better than) his portrayal of Jiang Zi Ya in FSB.

Chi You is pretty much a moron in the series, not unlike the Bull Demon King. The other villain-ish characters of Gong Gong, Fei Lian, and Xing Tian, on the other hand ... well, they're all incredibly DARK. Just how I like them to be. I like Gong Gong in this series FAR more than Zhu Rong, he's really an annoying hot-head. I'm not sure if Feng Bo will ever actually revert to his "beast" form of Fei Lian, but his human form is already pretty creepy-looking. As for Xing Tian, I'm just amazed. I thought they were just going to do the flashbacks of him (BEFORE his beheading) from when Shen Nong was telling Hua Shen about his past as Yan Di. However, I was shocked to see them actually introduce the scary-as-hell, headless, smoke-coming-from-his-neck Xing Tian. AWESOME.

Hou Yi is INCREDIBLY likeable in this series. Wise, philosophical, and reasonable. Chang E, on the other hand, is pretty much a wallflower. It's good that they did the Hou Yi shooting the suns and Chang E Ben Yue stories as back-to-back events, but I would have also liked to have seen Hou Yi taking on Fei Lian as well, as it happens in the actual legend.

So far all I've really seen of Mo Di is his unseen, dark aura/smoke form. However, seeing him CRUSH the King of Shangri-La and his son in a mere second and pretty much ERASE them from existence was all I needed to see to know that he really IS the most badass character in the series.

I mean, really ... only Mo Di is a large enough threat that is worth Nv Wa making an appearance to deal with him personally.

On the other hand, there are a handful of really stupid, annoying, pointless characters to sit through as well ... namely Bao Niang, Tu Di, Zao Wang, Zao Po, Zhu Rong, Le Le & Liao Liao, and others.

The Red Python is one of the most hateable characters I've seen in some time. She is completely without scruples or reason. Long Tai Zi is also one of the most despicable pieces of crap I've seen in a myth series. Those two really SHOULD stay together, they're made for one another. Puh. I seriously think Long Tai Zi is probably Ao Bing who gets killed by Ne Zha later in the Shang Dynasty. If so, good riddance. All he is is an unworthy vessel for Mo Di to possess.

Hua Shen is technically the protagonist and main character of the series, not Shen Nong. However, her "tough" and at the same time "upbeat" personality is just a little too much to handle at times. Even Wen Qing herself said that her character would be hard to accept.

This is still by far the biggest and most large-scale myth drama to date. NO other series incorporates as much authentic myth/legend as Chuan Shuo has, not even the Lotus Lantern Trilogy.

^^ wow that was educational! hua shen was ok but meddlesome. i liked this series very much and i thought shen nong was such a profound emotive character. mo di was surprisingly tragic. huang di was appropriately "kingly" but i didn't care for his infatuation with ruo xi. oh and the red python will improve over time...its just her appearance is not really sympathetic.

the sixth fairy was just too cute haha

So if you've watched the series (or at least part of it), you know that up to 70% of the characters in the series belong to a TRIBE of some sort. I love how director Wu Jia Tai decided to group all of these characters from Shan Hai Jing and other myths/legends during this ancient time period into their own tribes, all of which are based on some location in the Five Sacred Mountains of Wu Yue.

Wow, I just found out that even Nv Ba is based on an actual figure from Chinese myth. She's apparently the Demon of Drought, even though she's only a "mountain deity" in Chuan Shuo.

It seems like EVERY single character from the series is based on an actual figure from mythology, NONE of them were "created" solely for the show. Although most people probably wouldn't even recognize half of them.

Even Bao Niang the Matchmaker is based on the God of Marriage (old man on the moon).

The only one I'm not sure about is the Plague Lord, Wen Shen. Although he's probably also based on some figure from mythology, and was not created as an original character.

The only problem I have is that Wu Jia Tai decided to introduce Gou Mang as a mere mortal human instead of the Dragon Spirit of the East. Also, I definitely did not appreciate making Kua Fu into a "title" rather than ONE person, and then making Ru Shou part of the Kua Fu tribe when he is supposed to be the Dragon Spirit of the West.

Still, this series pretty much annihilates its predecessor, Jing Wei Tian Hai, from 2006 ... even though that series had BLD's Shu Chang and Gu Dan Chen, the premise really was quite stupid.

It makes much more sense to center the story around the protagonists of Bai Hua Xian and Shen Nong, not Jing Wei the bird ...

... although ironically, the Jing Wei legend is one of the only ones that is actually MISSING from Chuan Shuo, which sucks. But Wu Jia Tai DID put extra focus on the Zhu Que (Vermilion Bird), as opposed to the other three animals of the Four Symbols.

There are a few other characters in which their relationship to which figure from Chinese myth might be a bit confusing .... they are:

- Ruo Xi, who is based on Lei Zu, Goddess of Silk
- Zhao Xuan Lang, who is based on Zhao Gong Ming (Cai Shen), God of Prosperity
- Red Fairy (Red Python), who is based on the red-scaled python demon from Journey to the West
- Le Le and Liao Liao are basically the Gate Gods, Shen Cha and Yu Lei.
- Feng Bo's partner, Yu Shi, is the God of Rain
- Yin Ling Zi, the Taoist Immortal, is an ACTUAL disciple of Fu Xi's, as the character also appeared in Jing Wei Tian Hai (2006)
- Niao Ren is obviously Lei Gong, the God of Thunder ... and not just some idiot in a chicken costume ...

SPOILERS ...

I finally watched episode 41 last night ... the most epic, revealing, and pivotal episode yet. Now, after all these months, with only three episodes left to go, I'm wondering just how much more epic this series can get.

The huge, long exposition scene between Mo Di and Hua Shen was what I'd been waiting for up to this point. The flashbacks to Nv Wa and Mo Di's origins and the huge revelations. Also, you FINALLY get to see Mo Di's true, dark power in action ... as he proved why he IS the most powerful dark being in the entire realm of Chinese myth.

Shen Nong was finally able to finish off the Plague Lord Wen Shen once and for all, something that had been 40 episodes in the making. With the rest of his servants gone, it was just Gong Gong left to serve Mo Di. Of course, Gong Gong is also one of the strongest gods in Chinese mythology. In the battle he absolutely decimated the White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, Black Tortoise, and Azure Dragon ... one-on-four, singlehandedly.

Two MAJOR deaths in the episode, one following another ... although it was funny how everyone made a HUGE, emotional fuss over Bao Niang's death, but barely anyone cared about Hou Yi dying. Now I'm wondering how they're going to play out this story, consistent with mythology or not ... whether Hou Yi will become a Taoist god after death and be reunited with Chang E or whether he will just remain dead. Mo Di had also murdered Xing Tian in their last encounter, so the body count is just racking up now.

It was also revealed that those two annoying, rabbit children had been captured by the Demon Emperor this whole time. I was enjoying their absence very much. With both the Jade Emperor and the Yellow Emperor out of commission, it's obvious that Hua Shen is the only one who can stand up to her brother.

However, it should be noted that if Mo Di wanted to kill her, he would have done so (and quite easily) already. I'm aware that Mo Di is going to kill Gong Gong as soon as he no longer has any use for him, but before that, I'm hoping that he kills Zhu Rong. Another character I hate with a passion.

Mo Di made a reference to Shen Nong being Fu Xi's son, but he did not call him "cousin." It makes me wonder if any of them are even aware that Fu Xi and Nv Wa are siblings.

Seeing Yang Jian and Mo Di go toe-to-toe was f***** epic! The strongest god of the Taoist Pantheon taking on the strongest demon in existence. Absolutely mind-blowing. Of course, not even Er Lang Shen can withstand the dark power of the Demon Emperor.

And so, now I await the inevitable arrival of Nv Wa to "put things right again" ... it's amazing that director Wu Jia Tai was able to "save" the character until the very end of the series.

But before SHE appears, it seems Hua Shen will be gathering up all of the allies that she and Shen Nong have made over the course of the series, in a *futile* attempt to resist Mo Di's power.
